Well it depends on what kind of dispatching. I worked for an oilfield service company and I had to have computer skills, Excel and Word at the very least, be able to speak on the phone while taking messages and multi-tasking. Writing up Hazmat and MSDS sheets, have the ability to relay accurate directions at 110% accuracy, speak to internal and external customers, have working knowledge of the equipment that you are sending out and receiving as well as knowledge of the employees who will be driving and or coming onto the yard. Having knowledge of all of the products that the company deals with is essential. You have to have a general knowledge of the company itself and specific knowledge of any vehicles or personnel that you are dispatching and have the ability to prioritize, lots of different tasks time managed appropriately. Have multi-knowledge of DOT and employee rules, etc. if you dispatch for any company, it’s the heart of the company and the communication center. Know everything you can about the company or entity you’re working for or trying to get a job with.
