Location of job

Does anyone know of any companies hiring near Peru INDIANA THAT WILL HIRE SOMEONE WITH NON VIOLENT FELONY CONVICTIONS? Seems like debt to society is not ever payed because after serving 16 years in prison my criminal background constantly holds me back from trying to become productive member of society? #tips

First you need to go to your local District attorney and ask for the clean slate program, after obtaining a copy of your wrap sheet. There you apply to have your record expunged. The Deputy DA determines if you have demonstrated you are willing to abide the laws, stay clean and out of trouble and that you don’t pose a risk to society, and don’t want to harm yourself or anyone else. Then they give you a date when they will be willing to wipe the cases off of you record. It will take some time but having the date will help you stay safe and get your head into a place where you can prepare yourself for a job search. Be patient and know that a young man like you has options. You could work at UPS or FedEx they require someone who can lift 50-70 lbs and there are other jobs, like in warehouses where you do similar work. You may even be offered the opportunity to learn to drive a forklift. Good luck and keep striving. You will get a job. Stay focused and don’t give up or go back.

Master of gig work!!!

Definitely check out delivery driving jobs and gig-work jobs. From my understanding, they tend to be a bit more lenient on background checks. Good luck

Hi @Justin Woodhouse - I am so sorry that you're facing difficulties finding a job. People make mistakes, but past mistakes should not define a person's future. You've completed your requirements through the courts, so there is no reason for it to impact your career growth/stability!

Here are some companies that are known for hiring those who deserve a #secondchance:

  • Goodwill
  • McDonald's
  • Dollar Tree
  • Salvation Army
  • Starbucks
  • Waste Management
  • Amazon
  • Home Depot
  • Sears
  • Exxon Mobile

Here are some tips for your job search:

  1. Apply widely Apply to as many job openings as you think you qualify for, this will increase your chances of finding a job. The more well-constructed applications you submit, the more interviews you will hopefully secure!

  2. Stay reasonable You should always review the requirements and responsibilities for the position. If you feel you would make a good fit, tailor your resume to reflect the role you are applying to, and submit your application!

  3. Prepare, prepare, prepare Before you accept an interview, whether it be virtual or in person, be sure to do the proper legwork! Research the company, ask a family member or friend to do a mock interview with you, and practice your interview skills and proper body language.

  4. Be truthful There is a pretty good chance you may be asked about any criminal history. If it comes up, be honest, because many companies still run background checks and lying may disqualify you from being offered the job. Keep your explanation simple and accept responsibility for your actions. Shift the focus on how you have worked hard to better yourself and are ready to make changes in your life to help your career and give back to your community and those around you.

Best of luck, we're rooting for you!
