Diverse Background and Looking for Employment
I was a director at a nonprofit for 5 years and was laid off this year. I also have nearly 20 years of financial services marketing experience. My question is how do I tweak my resume to highlight my financial services marketing experience when the latest position looks completely different than what I'm applying for? In financial services, I focused on the trust, estate, nonprofit and philanthropy marketing categories. While there is a link, it's challenging to highlight that effectively to move back into a financial services role. Also, my employment to date has largely been achieved through my network. I don't think that I've gotten any job by simply applying through a website. Lots of changes have occurred and I'm now "cold calling" and applying online. I have a slight sense that my age may be contributing to the rejections that I've been receiving. I feel I'm very qualified, but navigating things now and in this environment is really challenging. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. #ageism #coronavirus #careerdiscovery

I would have separate resumes depending on the job you are seeking. Nonprofit resume, marketing resume, etc. If looking to apply to financial services marketing positions, highlight similar tasks and responsibilities you tackled at your non-profit. Responsibilities don't have to be industry specific and can be cross-marketed on your resume. Best of luck!

If it is too good to be true...lol.

I would highlight your project leadership skills Ability to resolve difficulties Meeting critical deadlines.
These are just examples to give you some ideas. We find it difficult to explain what we do because we just do it. You got it's just using the correct verbiage.

Hi Melissa this is a great question. I've made several hard pivots in my career as well and they weren't easy to do. A few things that I have found helpful:
- Adjust your resume to incorporate the language that is in the job description. This will help get you through the applicant tracking system screeners
- Unconventional cover letters. I found success when I tossed the typical cover letter out the door and wrote a two page report on where I saw opportunities in the company, how I would pursue those opportunities if hired in the role, and a 3 month plan on how to get there
- You have to network and get a referral. If the role is competitive, you can't expect to make it far unless you have the perfect background. You get pass this by meeting people at the company who can refer or vouch for you to the hiring manager

BTW, you are right about it being very challenging and also about age contributing. Do not doubt yourself. You're right.
