Don't Forget Unemployment

If you're a restaurant worker who is out of work due to a coronavirus shutdown, don't forget that unemployment was created exactly for situations like this and that it's high time to apply. Make sure you fill out the option for "Laid Off" when applying, and remember to put in all the jobs you have had in the time period that you are asked about, especially and even if you've had sporadic work. States should even have emergency money coming in soon, so now is the time to apply! #coronavirus #unemployment #layoff #foodservice

I am a restaurant worker that is unemployed due to the covid19 and I'm trying to collect unemployment but they won't let me because they said that I owe them $1,500 from an old job which they never sent me any notices for this just was like a 2x4 hitting me in the head I don't think unemployment should penalize people like me at a time like this they should just allow us to pay it back after this is all over

No you do not need to be employed by that employer a year You can have more than one employer and still have enough work weeks to be eligible for unemployment

BUT, you will need to have been employed by that employer for a year (or whatever the minimum time period is in your state). Unfortunately there is no exception with respect to the minimum timeframe.

In Atlanta, there is an organization called the Giving Kitchen that might be able to help. https://thegivingkitchen.org/

They are a wonderful organization that volunteer with from time to time and the work they do is amazing. They help unemployed restaurant workers.

where did you hear states having emergency unemployment funding? once you file a claim, expect to wait 4+ weeks. i’ve been on unemployment for a bit, and I just received documentation that states to expect a 10-14 day payment delay.
