Most importantly, show up to work. The service industry is hurting for reliable help. Also you must be a cleaner. Restaurants are cleaned constantly. It never ends. If you have a problem with cleaning dont take a server job. Be friendly, outgoing, respectful, and respectable

As a long time server I can tell you dependability is huge! Being on time and there for every shift. Being coachable, professional and working well under stressful situations as well.

In my experience, I've learned to adapt to many styles of service. I'm a versatile and dedicated worker with the ability to multitask, so I think I'd be a great fit for your restaurant that has a staff where each person needs to perform a variety of tasks.

You should bring up any certifications you may have and any accomodations you have received. The interview time would be a good place to bring up any old bosses personal references also.

I agree with all of those statements. I have worked fine dining as well as casual, but mainly fine dining. Being punctual and never calling out of work is always good. You should have great multitasking skills, awareness, and a good sense of responsibility. Food and alcohol knowledge is a bonus. I am a level two sommelier certified withe the Court of Masters program. Make sure you are outgoing and polite you will have to deal with people and situations that are beyond your control including fellow employees. Don’t be over concerned with tip policies. They vary for each restaurant.

Also on time , showing up for your shifts . Nothing worse when people don't show up last minute . Your putting someone else out and causing unneeded stress to another coworker and your manager. That goes for not being on time also. Yes it can be a very stressful industry . But if you stay awhile it will get easier . Don't let people get to you . Remember most customers that act rude or grouchy its probably because they are grumpy from hunger. If you give good service and keep being pleasant , I have found by time they are finish eating they become a lot more pleasant. 😀

At a interview make sure to go in with a big smile and let them know that you really enjoy working around people . That you are big in team work . Let you like keeping a clean environment. Make sure you leave your problems outside of work at home. That even when slow at work you will always look for something that needs to be done like organizing and cleaning . That you like to keep busy and that your not a slacker. In the service industry you have to be a people person and always friendly with a smile . That's why customers are there to get great customer service that is quick and efficient. They want to feel important and not ignored.. they want to know where they are eating is a clean environment especially when it comes to food and whomever is preparing it and who is serving it. For the most part you want to give the same service that if you were the customer that you would appreciate getting.
