Looking for a job
I'm 15 years old and i'm just trying to look for a part time job for the summer #firstjob #application #retail
Hey Boyo, Summer employment opportunities this season are going to be limited, therefore highly competitive, so be prepared to bring your ‘A Game’ in order to stand out among the other job seekers in the application pools.
The Good News is that there are still some local job opportunities available for minors/teens as long as you’re willing to pursue them.
Before you apply for jobs make sure you meet your states minor work permit and age certification standards. Minors (14 - 17 years old) number of work hours and schedule restrictions that employers need to be in compliance with in order to legally take on a minor age worker onto their team.
As a minor job seeker it’s important to know what those employment standards are so you can maximize your job search efforts pursuing job options you qualify for. Your school administrator can supply you with the forms or check out the US Department of Labor's website https://www.dol.gov for more information on where you can find downloadable forms.
Most employers who hire minors/teens aren’t expecting applicants to have a wealth of related paid work experience so don’t let that discourage you from applying for jobs. Focus on your personal traits and accomplishments as strengths that make you an ideal candidate for the job. Good Communicator, Punctual, Problem Solver, Team Player, Fast Learner, and Service Orientated are just a few personal traits and skills most people exercise during their daily lives but fail to recognize them as in-demand behaviors employers want.
Having a resume within this ongoing employment crisis is not necessary but helpful if you want to stand out. Google search for free online resume builders platforms for teen and first time job seekers. Sites like Resume Coach offer a step by step resume building experience designed to help you identify and highlight your strengths and accomplishments. Remember, spelling punctuation and grammar is Critical on a resume presentation to double/triple check your document before including it with your online applications.
Finally, be prepared to Network! Your teachers, family members, neighbors and friends are key resources for identifying good job opportunities and getting hired so make sure you employ your social skills whenever possible.
We recently published an article with an updated list of solid local and national hiring opportunities for minors and teens this summer, see Jobs for teens - who is hiring now?. The list has a few immediate job options to help you get started with your job search but you're also welcome to reach back out to us at any time if you have any questions.
Best of Luck to you this Summer & Please Stay Safe :-)
