What is Costco?

Costco Wholesale is a global company with a chain of large retail warehouses.

It sells a variety of goods at wholesale prices, including groceries, electronics, clothing, appliances, books, bedding, jewelry, fitness supplies, and home improvement. Some stores offer extra services, such as optometrists, a gas station, or tires.

Shopping at these warehouses is exclusive to those with a Costco membership. For a small annual fee, Costco membership entitles shoppers to lower prices and bulk purchases.

Costco is a U.S. company, but there are now stores in other countries such as Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Shoppers can choose a gold star, a business, or an executive membership. Each tier has different perks and rewards.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 Costco employee benefits:

1. Health insurance

Costco offers affordable health insurance to both part-time and full-time employees. The healthcare coverage includes general medical, hearing aids, and mental health care. These benefits are for the entire family, including spouses, domestic partners, and children.

The health insurance policy includes prescription medicine as well. Costco employees can access pricing as low as $3 for generic medications with a 15% copay for other drugs.

If there’s an accident, Costco workers can also access short-term disability insurance.

2. 401k plans

Costco has generous 401K plans to help employees prepare for retirement. You can choose how much to contribute to your pension account from each paycheck.

Employees at Costco enjoy paid time off (PTO). New full-time employees can access one week of PTO after one year. After two years of working at the company, the PTO goes up to two weeks.

For those who have been working for more than five years, there are three weeks of PTO. After 10 years, it’s four weeks.

Vacation leave continues to build up over time. Long-term staff who have been there for more than 15 years will get up to five weeks of PTO, plus sick leave.

If you’ve been working at Costco for more than 90 days, they'll pay you for any public holidays. These include New Year’s Day, Easter, Martin Luther King Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Both part-time and full-time employees receive this benefit.

4. Dental insurance

For those who work more than 23 hours per week, Costco offers affordable dental insurance. This coverage is for both the worker and their family.

There are two plans available: the Core plan and the Premium plan. Part-time workers can only choose the Core plan.

Depending on the plan, staff may get general dental, major dental, and orthodontic treatments. Choosing in-network providers will give you the best rates.

5. Maternity and paternity leave

Costco offers benefits for employees who are starting a family. Depending on the position and hours worked, paid maternity leave is between six weeks and three months.

Those in management positions receive more time off than Costco warehouse staff.

There’s also the option for paternity leave with three weeks offered to new fathers.

6. Sick days

In addition to paid vacation leave, Costco gives its employees several paid sick days. If you’re a full-time or part-time employee, your sick days will build up every week, with a total of nine sick days per year.

Most Costco managers will ask for a medical certificate before they approve paid sick leave.

7. Paid breaks

Another benefit of working at Costco is paid breaks. Most shifts are eight hours long, and employees are entitled to a 30-minute lunch break.

During the shift, there are two other breaks, both 15 minutes each.

Costco employees can take advantage of the onsite opticians that work at many of the warehouses. The company offers vision insurance with a free eye exam worth up to $60.

Plus, staff members receive $175 toward new glasses or contact lenses from any Costco store. This is available to all employees regardless of pre-existing eye conditions.

9. Life insurance

Costco offers accidental death and death insurance for employees only. The type of insurance benefits you can receive depends on how long you’ve been working there and the type of role you have.

Full-time employees who have been with the company for less than two years will receive their equivalent annual earnings. After this period, the payout will be double their annual earnings.

The maximum benefit is capped at $225,000.

Costco insures part-time workers for a maximum of $15,000.
