Toxic workplaces?
Are toxic workplaces becoming more common? In my work life, I've encountered a number of:
- Managers who can't lead;
- People in positions of influence who won't take advice; and
- Narcissists pursuing their own personal agendas.
In addition, many are still reactive, and can't seem to step back and focus on the strategic. It seems to me that these factors seem to be converging in a number of cases to create toxic work environments. My thoughts are that it is because the people who are in roles to set the tempo and make changes either:
- Don't have a clue how to do so;
- Have no concept of management techniques or history; (which relates to the one above)
- Don't care, because they're only there long enough to make themselves look good and move on;
- Are too proud to seek advice, because they feel their role means they should know everything.
- Fear positive change, because change entails unknowns and discomfort, even if the current process shows clear evidence of being broken.
The indicators of a toxic work environment should be obvious to all of us by now (especially those in a role of influence, where something can be done about it):
- Conflict over otherwise trivial things
- Animosity towards co-workers
- Fights for dominance, instead of cooperation
- Absent or uninvolved management
- Loud disagreements of increasing frequency, sometimes leading to personal disputes and obscenities
- Looking to place blame, instead of solving problems
- High turnover in what has not traditionally or previously been a high-stress environment
- Unwillingness to discuss differing solutions or perspectives
- Closing or obstructing normal channels of communication up the organization
- Talking over the top of others instead of given them their fair say
- People being placed in positions of authority for which they are clearly unqualified
What are your thoughts/experiences?

My biggest challenge I overcame at work was...
When the Union came in. It was and still is a company Union.

Counterfeit money
I was told by my supervisor this morning that my drawer is $20 over. There was a fake $20 bill that was accepted by a young employee last night. I was ordered to give it out as change in the first large bill transaction I got in the drive through. So... I’m supposed to give fake money out of my window because a multimillion dollar company simply cannot lose $20!!! No way! Our town is a high poverty level population. I said no. I was told I’m to take the rest of the week off. Then show up on Monday. Not likely. I’m not a fall girl. Scapegoat or accomplice to counterfeiting or the circulation of funny money.
