I am 67 years old. Many wormen start new careers at my age. Is my age an automatic deterent for an employer. Even if my qualifications exceed the request?

I am not ready to retire anywhere in the near future. However, I am not getting the chance for an interview, how will the employer ever know if I am ready and have the experience mentally as well as physically?

As I have been hunting and just turned 50 (and yes my profile pic is current as too may people have asked) I’ve worked in HR/OD my entire career and I hate to admit it but ageism does exist. Make sure you have someone look at your resume to make sure it is current. I’m getting about 3 interviews a week and many turn into second and I have a 3rd next week. But I have 4 different resumes and will now tailor for each job and I add a cover letter even it is optional as I was at the top level and really don’t need to anymore so I explain that there. Most of the interviews I get are through people I know and networking. Also make sure you’re LinkedIn is up to date we are your skills and your qualifications to ensure they know you are keeping up with current trends. If you can, add current volunteer work as well. My mom is 78 almost and still working and has learned technology and many other skills to keep her relevant. Just my 2 cents. It will happen but it truly is a full time job looking!!

By law, they are not to discriminate - no matter what your age. However, there are ways around that. In the initial application process, they will ask you what year you graduated from high school, which is not illegal. It does however, tell them with a really good approximation how old you are and allows them to overlook your application no matter the experience you have. I'm sure there are other ways - but that's the most obvious one that I have seen.

Also, be careful of your resume - it doesn't need to go back any further than 15 or 20 years if you have been in the same industry. If it does the same 2+2 still equals 4.

Good luck to you. I'm older with a very long background in one industry, so am facing all of the prejudices and biases you are. I'm not ready to retire - just don't want to, but it's really hard to find a job...

Worked at Smith & Nephew, Inc. for 17+ years as a Buyer/Administrative Assistant. I attend Cornerstone Church as well as serve in our nursery. I would welcome the opportunity to join a team of professionals to continue my career. A team player, self motivated and willing to experience change.

I've been self employed for 11 years laying flooring and installing showers. The company I mainly work for has been bought and it doesn't seem to going well and am looking for a career and job security.

I’m currently a CNA but after Covid I wanted to change my job title to something a little less hectic. And I’m so ready and motivated to find something new as a career. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to look over my bio and get to know me
