I am 67 years old. Many wormen start new careers at my age. Is my age an automatic deterent for an employer. Even if my qualifications exceed the request?

I am not ready to retire anywhere in the near future. However, I am not getting the chance for an interview, how will the employer ever know if I am ready and have the experience mentally as well as physically?

Having been a recruiter since 1980 I can confirm that age discrimination is more widely practiced than ever before. One reason is young managers do not seem capable of managing older, more experienced employees. Two, employers think older people will leave after a year or two (which the young employees are doing anyway). An option is to work on a 1099 or C2C basis so less cost to the employer (no SS/Medicare taxes, benefits, etc.).

Yes, I am a youthful 70yo and clearly your age and your fitness is the new discrimination. All business will say they are serious about hiring older worker, that is generally false. They are not. If you are overweight, heavy smoker and in your late 60's, then generally you pose too much risk for the employer.

I see a great number of "senior" level people taking 1099 and contract positions. It's not the perfect solution, however it does keep you in the "active" status with decent income.

I'm 67 and was laid off. Need to work (cannot retire, finances depleted due an illness in the family). I've been on a few interviews and no call backs. In fact, on one interview when the hiring manager came in I could tell just by his facial expression that the interview would go nowhere. I was right. Ageism is not new.

I am 66 years old and lost my teaching job at a community college basically because of COVID restrictions for students in my program (I am also an occupational therapist). I was somewhat forced into retirement. Been searching for 2 years for per diem or part-time work. 6 applications, 4 interviews, no calls back. Although they never can ask how old you are, when they ask how long you have been in your field and you tell them 38 years, they can figure you are pretty old. Ageism is real!

Age discrimination is real. I only went back 15 years on my resume. I didn't include school dates either. I finally started getting calls for interviews. It is awful that I felt the need to do that, but I was not getting calls prior to doing that.

I'm 57. I got laid off. I have been looking for a job for almost 2 years. My resume is impressive but no one wants to hire me. No income is coming in right now and I'm having to put my house up for sale because I'm desperate. I will probably be homeless this time next year. I'm trying to get assistance. I have been doing side hussles like pet sitting, door dash etc. Those do not pay the bills. My brother is supporting me and he's on a fixed income. Why am I telling you all this because if it's not my age, what is it then? I do have 2 job interviews this week. So I'm still hoping. But I'm about to lose everything.

Yes, it is a deterrent. I'm 64 and would like to work. I don't really need money, and am driven by a desire to accomplish and contribute.

I'm in great health and have an impeccable record. Yet I get zilch.
