Concerned

I was fired from my recent job in July, just before my birthday due to someone else's doing, she also got fired. She got another job because she didn't put that employer down on her applications. Can that ex-employer hinder my chance of getting a job ANYWHERE??

I have no more options!

Hello I have no references! Is it legal to ask for that certain type of help! I have 7 month old son that can depend me to keep wasting my college money! now im in dept with college and I cannot pay them back! I have no further assistance and I have been applying for multiple jobs but never get a call in return. I am overwhelmed because the only idiots that offer me a job are waiting to steal my identity. I want to be able to support my son, but these places I apply at don't give me the opportunity to let me show them that I can fulfill task that assigned me! We have an eviction notice! an I have been wondering the streets and in the employment offices to be able to stop this from being a thing where my son will be taken away! I don't want to lose my opportunity to be a great father!

Black Listed

I've been unemployed since May, I've had at least 30 interviews and everything is fine until they speak with my last employer. When I filed for unemployment, the woman in HR contested, it went to appeal and during that, the judge ruled in my favor and contacted the state department about the company. The woman in HR had a warrant issued for criminal negligence and I now I can't get work.

If you get laid off or fired...

Getting laid off or fired is tempting to dwell on what happened. That can be a dangerous road to go down, as focusing on the past can prevent you from achieving your future.

Yes, you're going to be asked why you're unemployed during an interview and it may be tempting to use that as an opportunity to tell your side of the story BUT.. that is a bad idea. Take the high road.

Be upbeat even if you were wronged by your previous employer. Tell the truth but keep it brief and focus on your desire to find new challenges, not any bitterness you have over what happened.

NEVER DISPARAGE YOUR PAST EMPLOYER - In many industries - especially the major players know each other. The person who is interviewing you may know your past boss was difficult to work with or that company has a terrible reputation. If this ever happens to you and they start to critique your former employer - don't take the bait. Take the high road with an answer like, it's fair to say there were challenges but I prefer to focus on what I learned from handling them. Just because the interviewer opens the door, doesn't mean you have to walk through it.

DON'T BASH YOUR OWN CHOICES -Focus on the opportunity ahead of you, not for what might have gone wrong in the past. You may have regretted that you didn't leave the company sooner - before a layoff happened. Don't bring it up. Keep the conversation on the opportunities ahead of you, and use your past to demonstrate how you've built the skills for whatever is next.

Show that you're excited about your future and that you're not moving on because you have no choice. Employers want employees who want to be there, not people forced to do something else.

DON'T BE OVERLY WISTFUL- It's ok to express admiration for your past employer but you don't want to act like a jilted bf or gf. Maybe you would have been an employee at the former company forever if it was your choice but your new employer doesn't want to hear that any more than a new person that you're dating want to hear how you'd take your ex back in a heartbeat. You just blew your chances with that person and they, of course, will run and not look back.

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE - Answer their questions truthfully, but try to make your interview about the future. Layout how your skills and experience make you a great candidate. Have a positive attitude, even if you just went through hell and let the past be the past.

Interview question

I would have started off with a question about there previous job they have worked at. Or ask them why they want to work here?

References

Hey all.......not sure if i did this right.......but if you haven't had a job in 10 years, what do you do about filling out applications/resumes when the references are so old? Been told to ditch those from 10 years ago but wasn't told what to do then?

What you are willing to do to get a job.

I am in a predicament with a possible employer. They want a Managerial reference, as you all may be aware of, almost all companies frown upon that and say their policy prohibits them doing so and that everything must go through HR. I was asked well why can’t you explain the situation and have them give you their personal email address. Then would go on to say that their company also has that same policy against managers giving references out without going through HR. To me that means they are unethical because why would you want me to break their company policy if their own company wouldn’t do it either. Why are they asking for this ex employer to,break their policies but wouldn’t even do,it themselves. What am I missing?

How do I explain???

How do you explain to future employers why you were released from your job when the reason wasn't clear or documented?. Plus, HR Managment was not aware of my termination or involved it. Also, no negative reviews during my introductory period. I was 2 months into my 3 month introductory period when I was released.

Sick of looking for jobs.

I reach the same stumbling block every time when looking for work. References!!!! Does not matter how well you do your job, people are disgusting when it comes to giving a reference. Most employers won't bother to tell you that this is why you were dropped. Don't leave anything to chance in this arena. Make sure you pick right people and let them know when you intend to use them. You would be surprised how many times this happens. !!!!
