How I nailed my #Goodnightnursingagency interview
They say the first impression is the last, they were moved by my smile, then from interviewing me they realize I had a fascinating personality, I also had strong references

Regarding
I went on my first interview after 20 years after being at the same job. She advised that she will check my references and then let me know. Does that mean I'm a step closer to getting hired. Or do i have the job.

Manager
I learned that I did not get a job due to one of my References. (5 out of 6 were good references from what i can determine) What recourse do I have? Do i have a right to see the references? Do I have a right to refute them? I don't care as much about the job, as I am of my reputation. I thought I picked all good references. Maybe someone has an axe to grind. They should hear my side of the story and not make a one sided decision. I appreciate any advise .

Getting let go
I was fired yesterday which was the first time for me. During the meeting I thanked my boss for the opportunity that he provided. I asked for suggestions of what he thought I should do to improve my skills. I also asked if he would be willing to provide a reference, to which he said he would. I then proceeded in explaining the outstanding work in my office that he would need to address and offered to answer any questions if needed on my work.

No references available
All of my jobs were temporary. I have 60 units of accounting. I have taught Graduate Auditing and Upper Division Finance. I have taught accounting in French. I was a member of three very important Army Reserve Units. Two-man twelve hour Junior Signal Officer examination finished in 11 hours by myself with no mistakes. I have taught 286 students in accounting in one semester in 60 seat auditorium in China. Translated five professors research papers without dictionary with a simple translation Passover and knew all of the advanced accounting that was left blank.

Should I lie
It seems very hard to get a job today. I am 35 and will be 36 this week. I have not worked since I had a accident heading to work in 2003. I don't have enough experience in fast food and 11 months working as a bagger, one month as cashier in fast food, etc. I go to school and studying for a transfer program(university) but I really need to find work. At my age, I have to wonder if I can get away with lying and how long before they would do a check on me? I don't have any legit references. My references were always my mother's friends, one was a referee for little league sports and another was a bus driver that retired and died. I have one co-worker reference but he's working under the table. I feel to get my foot in the door, I may have to lie. Ma and pa stores are probably the better alternatives to get the foot in the door. They probably don't do checks also. I never realized how hard it would be here in SC. Lying is wrong but not much you can do when you are at this age. That said, I see plenty of older workers at these low scale jobs and minorities at even insurance places so I don't think there is a age bias here yet.

The dreaded topic: references
I am TERRIBLE at asking colleagues and friends for references. It seems as though everyone wants three, and at least two of those from your current, or most recent place of employment. How do you ask your supervisors for references while you are still working for them? I also have the unfortunate problem that three wonderful people who generously offered to write letters of recommendation for me have passed away. These were people I worked for as a consultant on freelance projects--I have no one left to "prove" that I worked on these projects! Another question: is it true that prospective employers may only contact your previous place of employment for verification that you did work there? And that they may not ask questions about work performance, etc. ??? I had one HR person call and ask my previous supervisor questions like, "how would you describe her personality?" and, "how often was she late to work?" and "what excuses did she give for her mistakes?". Needless to say, I turned down the job after that!

Need advice
I have an interview next week. Here's the possible issue that may stop me from getting the job. I have an open WC case for harassment with my current employer, and I have been told it is the norm for the employer to settle and have me resign and leave the company. With knowing this I have been proactive in looking for employement. My question is how do I explain why they cannot Contact my present employer. My fear is they will give me a bad reference which I am pretty sure they will because the suit names the bosses boyfriend as the harasser as well as 2 others.

Awkward Situation
Do you think past employers get annoyed being contacted a million times by future employers for references? I'm starting to feel embarrassed by the amount of references my old boss is having to give.
