Got a 12 month Project

It was taking a very long time but here it goes, I got a 12 month project. Thank God! After multiple interviews of being over qualified. It's like once you reach over 9 years of experience everyone wants to pay you entry level or don't want to pay you your 9 years of experience worth. Time to grow my own business endeavours, but I need a base income to grow my side business.

Overqualified and Dumbing Down

I have a BA and MA, 15+ years experience in nonprofit social service Program Management and Administration. I am looking to transition into corporate admin in any capacity as I know there are many transferable skills. Yet, Im often told Im overqualified. I have been looking for a job for 2+years. How do you dumb yourself down while still demonstrating that you're a stellar candidate?

Underestimated and perceived as overpriced...

Can you have too much experience?

Any advice ?

I've moved from texas to baton rouge La, I have been here a month , quite an experience but I am enjoying the new view . I previously worked at a hotel for 8 years from the bottom to the top ! I was truly heartbroken when my last day of work approached due to husband relocating , nevertheless I trusted that with my experience in the costumer service industry / hotel chain that I wouldn't have trouble finding a job . BULL LOL ...EVERY position that applied for from hotels to generic stores to anything was not either available or I was overqualified . Had a interview last week with a GM of a local hotel during the interview she told me with your experience and qualifications and references I can not hire you I asked why she said and I quote sweetheart you are more experienced in this field than I am , you obviously know way more than me and I would be jeopardizing my job if I hired you , I have to look out for myself. I laughed and simply said if you were so good at your job sweetheart you wouldn't have a problem when people like me walk in your door and you must not be doing something right " smiled and walked away . Now I feel like my experience could actually harm me than help me should I lie and say I don't have experience so I can get hired ? I have another interview tomorrow not sure how to approach this one . Another thing I have filled out at least 100 application on line never got a response all my interviews are based on talking to people asking questions .

Either over qualified or under qualified?

What should I do if I am either over qualified or under qualified? I need help as I seem to be stuck in the job search world with no positive results.

Frustrating

I’ve been with temp agencies for the past 6yrs. And, they are always saying in the interviews, there’s a possibility for extensions. But, that never happens! I’m completely stressed tying to find a full time career and not a job. But, it’s like trying to find a four leaf clover in a mountain or three leaf clovers. Constantly, being told you’re overqualified or they went with another candidate. I’m literally at a loss, and so stressed about bills and other issues. That my hair in literally falling out and my health is declining. I honestly don’t know what to do.

What they mean by 'Overqualified'

Once you’ve been on the job search for awhile, you may have gotten rejected from a position or two because you are ‘overqualified’. Here’s what they mean by that:

  • They don’t think you’ll stick around Part of the appeal of a new job is that you’ll be able to learn new things, and if you have tons of experience for a entry to mid-level job, the employer is likely concerned you won’t stick around after the ramp-up process and honeymoon period.

  • They think you’re too expensive If you’re changing careers, you should acknowledge that since you have less experience in the field, you’ll need to take a pay cut. This will often be much lower than expected, so be sure you lay out your salary range at the appropriate point in the interview process if you’re serious about the career change.

  • They think your skills aren’t current If you have decades of experience in a field, chances are that field has undergone changes while you’ve been in it. You need to show them that you are able to adapt and learn new things constantly. If you are able to display that you’ve done this in the past, it’s even better for you.

Unemployed

Hi all... I’m new to the group but thought to share my sentiments. I moved back home (CT) from being away living in MD for 12 years due to my dad. I received my MS in 2006 and moved to MD. I worked all my life since the age of 13. In MD I became a COO for a non profit youth program, worked in DC Gov and ended last year as a DOO for a program working closely with the county executive. To date, moving back to CT I’ve been told I’m over qualified for most positions I’m applying for. I interviewed for a President/CEO position and became one of the top 3 candidates to have been told someone with more experience than I got the job. I was bummed. I’m trying not to give up as I am a recent divorcee with twin daughters age 6. I’ve applied to countless jobs and yet nothing. Asking for prayers.

Respectfully, Mom of Twins- my life!

frustrated

I have been a GM for 13 years I have decided to search for another position with less responsibility , but it has been very hard to find another position . Everyone that interviews me ends up with stating that I am over qualified for the position . Can anyone advise me on what I should do or change to be noticed not so much to focused on my previous position as a GM .
