My advice to people interested in working at #NewYorkLifeDirect
Bring your best self forward and keep going. NYL offers each employee keys and opportunities to not only succeed but excel in your career. From day 1, do your job. Cliche. But, I am serious, do your job. If you are serious about making NYL your career company I cannot stress it enough. DO YOUR JOB. Then, listen to your manager. Have open and frank conversations about your performance, goals, and what is needed to move up and into your dream career and/or department. Also, make yourself a KNOWN ENTITY. If you're shy (like me), start slow and at your speed, but get in there and start being active, proactive, take initiative, let people you become close with and familiar with your interests away from the job because frankly what we all fail to realize and UTILIZE most times for fear of 'rocking the boat' or appearing to be 'too aggressive (there is a fine line between aggressive and gracefully assertive) is that WE are more than the SUM TOTAL OF OUR RESUMES. Are you a mom that has been out of the job force because you raised your children? Wonderful! That's not a weakness or shortcoming. That's a strength! You have already the skills to succeed--organizational, time management, multi-tasking, communication skills tailored to different personalities, supervisory skills, a keen eye and sense for details. Those are ALL critical soft-skills hiring managers drool over. Just out of college? Fantastic! You're fresh, new, have great ideas, passion, excitement and the drive to prove yourself. Are you a seasoned and mature adult looking at retirement or the desire to jump back in? What more can a company want than someone that has years of work experience that has seen the new replace the old and how to quickly adapt and change without a lot of drama? You are the perfect person to showcase how things get done you can teach everyone a few things because you've seen it, done it, and heard it all and nothing stirs you. What I am saying is that whether it is at NYL or another company, these days you must shine on paper but as well as a human being. Companies will remarkably find ways to channel your expertise somehow and to their and your advantage. The job you walk into is not necessarily the job you will end up with so you have to be ready to raise your hand and step up and also as one of my best managers at NYL told me as I was scared to take a chance at my dream job..."Do NOT ever stay in a job or career simply because you have a great boss." Why A truly effective manager works with their team to their very best knowing that someday they will move on to bigger things." This is what I learned in my first 2 years at NYL Direct after having the position dropped in my lap in a brand new industry just as I was trying to figure out what to do with my life after raising my daughter. Two years later, my dream job opened up and simply by following my advice I got it. It may sound old-fashioned in this hyperfast social media-fed society where everything is expected to happen over night but in reality it still boils down to everyday getting up, dressed, and doing your job.
