What I Miss About Working
It's been some time since I've worked due to my disability. However, I'm desirous to rejoin the workforce as I see so many opportunities to contribute to society, whether through technology, or product development, or the many, many new services that have come about since the birth of the Internet. The workplace has almost become a level playing field, as competition is less about one's looks, or friends in high places, or even obvious disabilities. I'm still young enough to productively contribute and feel an increasing need to do so. But don't misunderstand -- before becoming disabled, I've had several careers and put in nearly 40 years of paying my dues: I've owned a marketing firm, worked in advertising agencies, taught at the university level for nearly two decades, and even worked for the federal government in the 2010 Census. Now, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with people, professionally and personally, earning additional income to enhance the lives of my college-aged kids, and creating a comfortable future for my own retirement. So, what can you offer me?

Obstacles for older workers...should be how older workers can get hired.
In this day and age I'm finding it very difficult to get my foot in the door. Job after job I'm being looked over, as they hire younger, unseasoned marketers. I have 20+ years in the field with a Master's in Marketing and can't make it passed the horde of young talent. I asked a recruiter to be honest with me, and the rely was, "In this day and age there is still a fear of being laid off due to the past recession be it downsizing or replacement. So hiring managers, regardless if it costs the company money to train unexperienced marketers, will not hire older seasoned marketers because of the fear that they may be replaced. It is easier to release someone with a couple of years and a Bachelors degree. They don't want to be the one released." If this is true, how is a someone like myself to get back into the field? (Secondly), if seems now-a-days, companies are combining roles. For instance, we want a marketing manager who is also a web designer. Or a marketing director who is also a graphic designer. To me this doesn't make sense. How can you take a person like myself who is a marketing strategist that creates campaigns and research...then put together players like web designers and graphic artists, etc. to complete projects; but expect me to be those skillsets also? I don't know many skillsets like those who are big picture and can run departments, do research and assign roles that are only educated and experienced in their specific roles. Doesn't make sense. That's like have a football coach who is also the quarterback, lineman and defensive end too. I'm finding this is now common place.

Lame excuse
I'm 51 and like many of you on here have been having difficulty getting interviews and job offers despite my years of experience. I went on a job interview 10 days ago and had, what I thought was a very successful interview. I interviewed with 5 people at once and fielded numerous questions from each. The interview lasted close to 90 minutes and at the end the interviewers expressed how impressed they were with my experience and knowledge and said that I was superior to any of the other candidates that they had interviewed for the position. As you can imagine, I felt good about the process and was fairly confident that I would receive an offer. Today I was notified by the recruiter that they made an offer to another candidate. When I asked why they passed on me she told me that....and this is no joke....they did not like the shoes that I was wearing and they felt my nails should have been longer and painted. I was not interviewing at a salon or spa...I interviewed for a Digital Marketing Strategist position....a position that I have 15 years of experience in doing. I am appalled.
