Hi. I'm Noah. I have been working as a Graphic Designer for over 20 years and thought it would be really great to connect with other designers and share our ideas and experiences. Since we all work in the best profession there is, we already have a lot in common. Already looking forward to meeting you.

My father had the nickname OB because of his last name. He was a mural painter and graphics artist. In those days there was no digital so his work was all by hand. When I became about ten I begin to steal his calligraphy or letter book and do drawings on my own like dad. I stole it so much that my father began to bring me along when he did his work so he would have his letter book. I understudied him from about 1960 to '66 when I went into the service myself. I scored high on the test and was sent to electronics, radar, and computer school. I learned some of the first digital graphics and computer stuff that was around. I worked on an air control computer that had only 2meg (not gig) bytes of memory and was spread over 15 huts. It was mobile and worked, as long as you didn't move it. Late in life, I put it all together with two degrees in Technical Communications that combines digital art with web programming from OSU. I'm 68 and retired, so this is my last hurray. What I am looking for is entry level Web and/or graphic design with a salary between $10k and $25k. Online at home would be preferred. I have XHTML, JavaScript 1.2, PHP 5, CSS 2.0, and some Ajax, Basic, Java, C++, and asm. I have worked with both Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office (Power Point, Word, …). I have a clean record and I am a Viet Nam Vet. There is more to my story, and the color, in my portfolio (See below).

I am looking to change industries career wise. I have always wanted to pursue a career in art, however given timing, resources, and support, I've never been able to do so until recently.

About 2 years ago, I quit teaching middle and high school visual arts and decided to try and gain employment as a graphic or visual designer. I've spent many years honing my skills immensely in order to compete with professionally trained artists. I am finally confident with my abilities and feel my portfolio can match someone with this level of experience, however I can barely get employers to view my portfolio. My works have been featured in major publications, I've been a culinary chef, painted large murals and I learn very quickly regardless of the industry or task, but I cannot seem to even get an interview or persuade people of my abilities. I've applied to well over 1000 jobs this year alone. I have had quite a bit of formal education including post graduate work (3 degrees) but I cannot afford to go back to school for additional training (and to be frank, college/univ. degrees aren't worth it at times). I self taught myself graphic design with over 10 years of personal experience, and plenty of freelance work so I have many examples of my capabilities and range.

Does anyone have any helpful advice regarding breaking into the art and design industry without additional schooling? I have multiple formats of resumes, creative out of the box styles and traditional formats as well. Your advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks to all who help in advance!

I graduated with a degree in Graphic and Web Design last year, but I gave that up because I didn't feel passionate about it anymore and didn't feel that I was good enough. But now I'm trying to get back on track. I had a couple of internships that weren't that great and I haven't done any design work since I graduated. How should I get started in the design world with little to no real world experience and intermediate software design skills. I still have my stuff from my portfolio show and a profile of my work on Behance. How do I get back on the horse? How do I start over again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Lost my job after 17 years, although there seems to be a lot of job openings in my field, I've not had an interview. I've been using Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXpress most of my career and know them better then most. In the last 6 months I've been taking Web Development courses, Dreamweaver and a really fun program called Captivate. Far from being a pro in them but I'm ready to build smaller web sites without the ecommerce part. Once I have a few sites built it won't be long and I will soar! Examples of my work can be seen at http://www.graphicdesires.net. Thanks!

I'm a hard worker and a fast learner. I'm punctual and I have a great attendance record. I have a BA in graphic design but I'm open to doing other jobs such as a shipping clerk.
