My advice to people interested in working at #TargetDepartmentStore as a #FoodHandler,Cashier ...
I began my career with Target in Huntington Beach CA on 10/04/2003. I started in apparel (which is Soft Lines). I was given my own department after 2 months. When the store was closed for remodeling in 2005, I transferred to the Westminster store. I became the Soft Line Brand Attendant, and then Team Trainer for Soft Lines. These are considered moves up the corporate ladder. Both Soft Line ETL Bobby Godiva and Hard Line ETL Charles told HR that MY people were the best trained they had. (ETL is Executive Team Lead.) When I decided to move to Washington in 2009, Joyce (don't know her last name) from HR e-mailed the Target stores in Olympia and Lacey telling them that I was looking for a full time position. Both stores (Olympia and Lacey) responded that they had positions open. I chose (at 53) to transfer to the Olympia Store. I would guess Target Olympia has between 75 to 100 employees. In September 2009, I started out in Soft Lines. Since the store already had a Soft Lines Brand Attendant and a Soft Lines Team Trainer, I didn't think much of not being given either position. I was sure that my career would continue to move upwards once the people got to know me. I informed Tim ETL Soft Lines I was a Team Trainer at the Westminster store. The only response I got was, “Oh. That’s good to know.” My hours at the time were low. I thought it was the seasonal nature of retail. Jennifer Gorman ETL HR said the hours would pick up a little later in the year. They did, but not as much as I thought they would. In February of 2010, open enrollment for benefits started. That is when I learned I was no longer a full time employee. I talked to Kelli Greene in HR about my part time status. She told me that 20 to 30 hours a week is full time here. She also told me I, "would never get 31.5 hours at this store“. I though perhaps she meant because I was not a lead. The other store allowed cross training so that people could be full time by working different departments. Perhaps this store did not allow that, though it seemed very unlikely. I would often ask about more hours. I was transferred to the Front Lanes where I could be scheduled more hours. I also was called in to cover shifts when someone call out sick. I started to help train people on the cash registers. Still, I was only part time. Monica was assigned to “shadow” me. Weeks late she was given the Soft Line Team Trainer Position. While Team Trainer isn’t a promotion, it put you in line for Team Lead Position. Bobby Godiva explained that to me when he offered me the trainer position. Monica was in her early 20s, I was in my mid 50s. Front Lanes Team Trainer Tonia Cox comment, “Well, you have to be young and cute to get a promotion here.” It appears she is right. I wrote to the store manager Rachael, asking how Monica was more qualified than I was, to do the job I was doing at the last store I worked at. Only then, was I allowed to be Team Trainer for the front lanes. Kyle Strong ETL Hard Lines inadvertent said I was the only real Team Trainer in the store. My guess is the others didn’t take the test required to be a Team Trainer, according to corporate policy. Again, I asked Kelli about more hours. She told me she didn’t have any hours to give me. When I persisted, she told me she just hired 20 people to fill all the shifts she had. Later (I believe it was the next day) the store manager Rachel called a meeting for all the team trainers. She told us that the store had a % 60 turn over rate. More than half the people hired left their job before being there 1 year. She told us we needed to do a better job of training people. Some time during the meeting, the subject of shift hours came up. I told Rachel what Kelli said about hiring 20 new people to fill all the shifts she had. I told Rachel, “Hire 19, and give me some shifts. Put me in coach!” Rachel just confirmed that the store did, in fact, hire 20 more people, then changed the subject. I applied for a lead position at the Target Café. Even though I was the ONLY applicant, I was refused the position. The only reason I was given was an inadvertent "But then you would be full time," by Sarah, the new Executive Team Lead for HR. No one told me why being full time was an issue. The Guest Service Team Lead Michael wanted to give me the position. The Café Team Lead transferring to the Lacey Cafe wanted to give me the position, Rachel and Sarah, both said no. Michael quit because of “Store Policy”. He also confirmed what I suspected. If I didn’t get this lead position, I wouldn’t get any other either. I called the Westminster Target and talked to the person in HR. She told me to call the. Integrity Hot Line, but don’t tell anyone she told me to call. I called the Integrity Hot Line and reported all of this to them. After checking out everything, the Olympia Store was told, "there is no reason," I shouldn't be full time. Tim was terminated shortly after for not following corporate policy. My hours increased to full time in 2011. The Café had three leads since I started working there. Jessica Stepanek was the last. They have since eliminated the position. In June (I believe is was) of 2016 I requested training for the Guest Service Desk. Everyone I talked to agreed that I would do well there. I inquired many times. I was always told by the GSTL Mica (pronounced Me-ka) there were not enough hours available to train me. Yet, I saw many young faces (most are 25 or younger) and recent hires, especially before Christmas. Still, I was not allowed to train for that area. The newly hired were (And Still Are) trained and promoted to GSA. I was given full time hours until 2016. That is the same year I turned 60. I realized at the end of the year, I was cut short of full time by 15 minutes per week. Therefore, again, I have only part time status. No reason was given as to why. If I ask, I'm told there aren't enough hours. However, I saw that others do get extra hours. I saw the Olympia store advertising for more personnel, including a position in Soft Lines. I, however, am denied extra shifts. I am denied extra hours.
