Need help

Hi everyone. I am really struggling finding a full time job. I was at my previous job for almost 18 yrs I was laid off. That's what they told me.i was making good money. Being that I don't have an accounting degree. I found out they hired 1 person to do AP @ AR. I have 20 years experience as a AR Clerk and B2B Collections. They gave me my 4 weeks paid vacation and unemployed for 6 month. I got pretty luck because right when my unemployment went away. I got hired I was so happy. My boss was nice but she thought i wasn't the right fit. I was there for 90 days. She kept telling my that she didn't trust me and refused to train me on what the job entailed. All I did all day was releasing orders. I don't know what happened. I did make 2 mistakes but I was new and they did talk to me about it. I'm very confused my last day was Dec 5th 2018. I was shocked. She said. She didn't think I was a good fit and my filing was still not mastered. I didn't say anything and left. Im thinking to myself I was there for 90. I was always asking and taking notes. Maybe she didn't like me. That's crazy.. Well anyways I am doing what I can to put food on my table. I am doing odd jobs here and there like baby sitting and I'm trying schipt. Its better than nothing. I want to do what I am good at. I stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning to apply for jobs in all the web sites because they up load them at midnight. I am really frustrated I thought I was going to retire at my last job. I want to work but no one is giving me a chance. I just get calls from recruiters with lots of broken promises. I am going to take a excel class next month for free at the library because I only know basics. I am not picky I don't care what kind of company. Even working from home would be great. I am willing to work for 18 hr. I don't know what else to do. I'm running out of options. Because I collected uneployment last year they said I can probably apply next month because it will be a year I don't know if I collect unemployed from a job that I was only for 90 days. I don't have health insurance. I'm trying to get Medicare and nothing. I live in Illinois my zip is 60089. If there is anyone out there that can help get me a job I would really appreciate it. I'm tired of living like this. I pray every day that my time will come soon. Thanks for reading this Lisa

Tell me about yourself

One of the most common questions asked during an interview or at a job fair is…

Can you tell me about yourself?

Other variations could include: -Why should we hire you? -Why do you want to work here? -Tell us who you are. -What is it about us that makes you want to work here?

Just know that employers are NOT looking for you to actually tell them about your personal life like your favorite tv shows or how awesome your children are. They are expecting you will tell them about yourself and give them a brief overview of who you are, professionally speaking.

You should be ready with a one-minute answer that summarizes where you are in your career, generally with an emphasis on your most recent job and the strengths of your approach.

Answer these 5 questions to help you plan what to say and impress employers!

1- What are the three strongest reasons I am a great fit for this job?

2- What are some positive things I can say about the company, and how can I connect what they do with what I can bring to them?

3- Why do I really want this job beyond having a steady paycheck and perks?

4- What are three AWESOME things I did in my previous position that I can also offer in this new role?

5- What is the EXACT job description (make sure to write it down) and how do MY skills match up with it? Be as specific as possible.

Answering these questions will help you feel prepared to go into an interview with some great things to say!

Ready to go?

If you have you spent some time at a job and now you’re ready to move on, don't worry, you can take the skills you have gained with you and transfer them into a new desired role!

Here are some ways to get started:

Check the job description If you’re not sure which skills you should include for a particular role check the job description and see what they are looking for! Here are a few examples of skills which you can transfer.

-Leadership -Motivation -Time management -Delegation -Communication -Research

Find more skills [here] (https://www.utoledo.edu/success/career/pdfs/transferable_skills_checklist.pdf).).

Show proof Make sure once you add a skill to your resume that you show how you performed it at your job! -Don’t just say: "Great leadership skills." -Prove it: "Excellent leadership skills, demonstrated when I successfully managed a small team of individuals over the course of a three-day fundraising event."

Make a list of your job duties Create a list of your current and past job duties. Focus on more than what is required of you in your current/previous job or what was/is in your actual job description. Think about what you were you responsible for on a daily basis! Which tasks and duties have you done daily and also which ones did you fulfill that were outside what you were hired for?

Record your accomplishments Now it's time to list specific accomplishments. Did your boss recognize you at some point? Did you save a colleague time by helping he or she complete a project? Think of achievements that are both large and small. They ALL matter to your next employer!

Best of luck.

Got a Resume Gap? No Problem!

So you read Ashley Wilson 's post on writing a resume with gaps, and you got the interview! But what if they ask about resume gap details in the interview?

Be honest

Maybe you had a baby, or maybe you took time off to take care of yourself or a family member. There’s no shame in that. You might find a connection with the interviewer if they have had a similar situation.

Think forward.

The more guilt and shame you have about your resume gap, the more the interviewer will be able to pick up on. There will be twists and turns in life, and that is completely normal. Make it clear to the interviewer that you are now ready for an opportunity to challenge yourself and create value for the company.

Life happens.

Let’s say you had to leave your old job because of personal issues. No problem! Tell the interviewer that you had to take time away to resolve personal projects, but you are now ready to focus on your career. Accept that you have a resume gap, and try to speak briefly and calmly about it. If you do this, chances are they will be more interested in your attitude and skills than the gap itself.

If this has helped you, please comment below and let me know!
