My advice to people interested in working at #Atkinson&Associates as a #OfficeManager ...

They are a great company to work for. As a general contractor specializing in commercial projects every project is different. You get to meet and work with people from different parts of the area. You won't find a better place to work.

The choice is in your hands

Two days ago, I ran into an Administrative Assistant who worked at my son's school. She was laid off the same year my son graduated two years ago. She is still jobless and when I asked her what type of job she was looking for she said Clerical in an office. I asked her if she knows how to use Microsoft Office especially Word and or Excel and she said no. I strongly suggested that she focus on upgrading her skill set so that when she applies for positions, she will be more marketable. She is a nice, mild mannered woman but at the end of the day, finding a job does not care if you are nice or mean. Its about your skill set, how marketable you are. As I get older I realize this even more. There are times at my job where I worry if I am going to be laid off, the reality this job does not owe me anything. I have to stay on top of things and make sure my skills are relevant and will be beneficial to me or any employer. I get it, being unemployed sucks. It will make you feel worthless, like you don't matter. If you don't focus on keeping your skills fresh and you don't remain relevant, you will become obsolete. Its not about how many years of work experience you have, how old you are, if you cannot transfer your skills to a potential job, I don't care how many resumes you send out, you will not get phone calls requesting for you to come in for an interview. Take control of the things you can control. Most of us have smart phones, make it your business to learn, expand your current skill set so that you will remain relevant.

Something great I learned at my job was

Being front office clerk for 21 years in 2 different schools I learned that a good volunteer base was very important to the teachers. Time for duties outside the classroom (copying, bulletin boards, etc) done by volunteers gave teachers a little more time to give to students.

Looking For Empliyment

I'm looking for employment as a secretary/receptionist or live-in caretaker easily reachable by public transportation. I live in the Jefferson Park neighborhood. As a secretary/receptionist, I have over 25 years experience and about 3 years experience as a caregiver. Does anyone know of a reputable temp/temp-to-hire agency that I can work with?

Why should it be this hard?

I have been a contractor for many years, although not my first choice to be. I have gained a lot of valuable experience as an Admin and Executive Assistant. I have a college degree. With each role I take on, there is always the chance of being offered the role permanently but there are always budget reasons why the company or department cannot take me on. (I've worked in the pharmaceutical arena where there are many mergers and reorganizations with tight budgets.) I was very much liked in my last role and my managers have given me glowing references. I've been on many interviews and still have not been able to find work since December of last year. I began looking while I was still at that role knowing it was coming to an end. Now I'm being asked or judged why I have not worked since then. I honestly don't understand why this should be so difficult. I went on one interview in which my resume matched exactly what they were looking for and I had worked for the company in the past and so I felt I had a good chance. One of the managers looked at my resume after asking me all of the pertinent questions and wanted to know about a small gap in my resume from 2008. It was all I could do to contain my anger. But I did not let it show. What kind of an imbecile needs to ask about a gap in someone's resume from over 11 years ago when the most recent experience is a perfect match??

I feel so doomed the longer I am out of work. And what is with all these Indian agents calling me for roles, but I never get the job. Do they work on commission? One of them just today said, "Why have you not worked in such a long time?" I hung up on her. If this is politically incorrect, I couldn't care less!

-Had it and at my wits end!

Experience but no degrees

Why is it so hard to find a job without a degree? I have experience as an office/administrative and receptionist but still can't find a good job. I've been applying for jobs for over a year now with no success.
