Reaction Poll: Who do you use for references?

This is a tough one for a lot of workers. I've heard many job seekers find it hard to fill in the reference request for new jobs, when the best references they have are those they currently work with. People are afraid to count on current employers to provide a reference, because they don't want to loose their job while looking for another one, right?

So, who do you use as your references?

  • 💖 Current coworkers
  • 💯 Past coworkers
  • 👏🏽 Friends and family
  • 🤔 People I volunteer with

Share any tips or experiences you might have on this in the comments! #watercooler

Company's hardly ever call references. They know its a set up. Most interviews are designed to see your reactions to the questions. They don't care what the answer is

I usually use past bosses, because I know they'll give me a great reference. One position told me they didn't get past the two references I gave from one company because I got such glowing recommendations. So remember, treat Everyone like they're important, because they are. And yes, try to leave on a good note, especially with coworkers.

I often use past managers I've had the best working relationships with! And it's good to check with someone before you list them as a reference, that way they can be prepared! 💗

It's not tough unless you're a bad employee and have left messes behind you at previous employers. For the most part the best reference is a previous manager, always think about that as you're working for that person, one day they may be the reason why you get your next job. Inform whomever, hopefully a teammember, or someone else that you worked closely with that you enjoyed working with. They are the best. You just have to make sure you leave a good track record and there is absolutely nothing tough about a good reference.

I've had my last job for 22 years so this is a little harder for me to answer, but I think people with some clout in the community are good bets. I used my pastor and people from the church who were older and had life and work experiences.

This is a great question! I would typically have 6 people that are on my list for references. My list consists of 3 personal and 3 professional. Make sure you get permission before giving out your references personal information.

I use a good friend who was a well-known detective in the community for 38 years. He has written me a wonderful reference letter. I also use a former colleague who knows how diligent I worked to support her and her large team. I use a former boss who was my boss for five years and he was just two levels below the CEO of my company. Always use someone very trustworthy such as a clergyman, a doctor, a business owner, a former college professor, someone who has had some authority and longevity in his or her own line of work.

Great question, as with any thing you have to just roll with the punches & have an open mind, that the people you picked to give you personal references, well from prior experiences you got to have faith & believe that they aren't going to sabotage your chances, guess you'll find out soon!
