If a coworker with a bad work ethic asked you for honest feedback, would you be completely candid or soften the truth?

Be honest with diplomatic Kindnesses. : )

If they ask for my honest opinion on them I will give it to the straight. That's the reason why this world is so messed up. They can't handle the truth. Everything is softened

I would give them honesty in a subtle way and yet point out their positive aspects. Then once again point out what they need to work on.

Softly and politely state the truth.

Tell them the truth about it

I will be diplomatic but saying the truth

I would be honest with them. I would assume they asked because they want to better themselves, sometimes sugar coating things is counterproductive.

This is the time to be tactfully authentic. If this coworker comes to you in this manner, they are interested in self-improvement. That is commendable and should be honored.

Candid but in a positive way and point out many good things and explain honestly that the good things get over shadowed by the others.
"I appreciate you asking for my honest feedback—it shows you’re open to growth, and that’s a great first step. I want to be candid while also constructive, because my goal is to help, not to discourage. I’ve noticed that sometimes deadlines or responsibilities don’t seem to get the same level of priority from you, which can affect the rest of the team. For example, when tasks aren’t completed on time, it creates extra work or delays for others. If you focused on being more consistent with follow-through and time management, I think you could make a big impact. You’ve got strengths, and with more consistent effort, I believe your contributions could be much stronger."
