I am old school, I suit up all the time. No matter the job

If possible, ask the employer. Usually, in the mesage I've received prior to an interview, they mention what they consider proper attir, and follow what they say.

Dress for the next job up from what you are interviewing for. Hint- that is most likely the person that will be conducting the interview and the one you want to leave a positive impression with.

I always were a good suit. Even for a job where jeans is acceptable. You want to shine.

You want to make a good first impression. It is what we notice first when we meet the applicant. 1st impressions are lasting!

A good rule of thumb told to me years ago that has always done me well is to see how the employees dress and go up one notch from there. So if it's fairly casual, a button-up shirt should do. If they wear button-up shirts, then add a tie. Etc.

This goes for both interviewing and for when you job requires you to visit clients at their office or site (as mine often would).

If you don't know, it doesn't hurt to fail conservatively; it's a first impression after all. But in that case I like to ask someone working there what they suggest, and then I'll take it up one notch as described above. It's worked great for over a decade so far!

Always dress up a bit, at least look like you put some thought or effort into your clothes. Make it look like you're taking this seriously. Even with virtual with videoconferencing, you need to look professional. And that extends to your lower half! There are too many videos of men that have been embarrassed because they were too casual on their lower half. Remember, you never know what might happen with a video call. And try to keep pets and kids contained for video calls. The interviewer wants to know that you can be professional and get the work done without distractions.

I look presentable but not on a suit.

Definetely depends on the job. Suits are expensive.
