I work in the field overseeing team installation projects, and today when I logged into work email I was forced to download a new tracking software to access my email.
Then they asked me to enable tracking to they can spy on me at all times with my own phone.
This feels wrong, right? #privacy
Jason is correct. If they want to use tracking software (and many do), the company must provide the phone/tablet.
I do agree that they should be handing you a phone from there own company that's already downloaded with there information on it.
Tracking your personal email or a company email? If it's personal email, then I think it's reasonable to stop and ask some questions. If it's a company email - it's their domain, and they may need to track for regulatory purposes (not sure what kind of project it is). I would ask why they're tracking activity and how they plan to use the data they're monitoring. Good luck!
This happened to me before, I worked a start up and we didn't have any big brother technology on us. Then we were acquired, and suddenly everything we did - or didn't do - was trackable. Brave new world.
I don't claim to be a total expert but I have dealt with cyber issues including tracking for many years. There are many issues here:
- What agreement did you sign when you joined the company and put company email on your personal cell phone? You might have agreed to this without even realizing it.
- Who pays the cell phone bill? If the Company pays or reimburses you, it gives them more control.
- Can you turn off the tracking app in SETTINGS when you are not working? A lot of these apps can be turned off.
- What is the Company's cell phone policy?
- Depending on how your phone & email is set up, is the app only tracking work ?
- One solution is to get a separate work to be used for work only with ONLY WORK EMAIL. Ask your company to pay for it and turn it off when not working.
- Consult an attorney
I THINK NOT!!!! I VOTE NO!!!!!! 😠😠
100% invasion of privacy!!! Never!! I would quit
Why don’t they just tell you that you can’t take personal calls during work hours but you can on your lunch hour or before or after work? My ex-hubby’s oil company was like that. They would fire anyone playing personal games or surfing the Internet during work hours—even over lunch, playing on a work computer was a no no. Just lock it up or shut it off & stick on vibrate in your pocket. If someone phones, go to the restroom & check any urgent texts in a stall. They cannot spy on you there…but to ask that they install tracker software on your personal phone is pretty much infringement. Tell them if it’s a deal breaker in keeping your job that then they need to give you a business cell phone.
That’s ridiculous and very much infringement! I wouldn’t do it…don’t follow the herd. Take this one up the corporate flagpole to find out who makes the final call. If they won’t budge on this, I might start looking for a new job..
It's disgusting what companies can get away with these days.
Let me get this straight. You pay the bills on your phone, you own the phone, and your company wants to monitor you on it?
