out of loop How does one with 10+ years experience start over?

So is anyone else finding themselves out of work after many years and way behind the times. I feel as if I need to go back to school and relearn software engineering as technology completely passed me by during my tenure on my previous job. Worst part is, no one will hire me as a junior software developer, citing that I have too much experience. How does one with 10+ years experience start over? #careeradvice

Pick a new career. I'm in a similar situation, & 47 years old. I also have some disabilities, from being a Disabled Veteran. I'm lucky enough to go back to school for cheap, cause of benefits from VA. I am seriously thinking of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, & then maybe higher if I want to. The nursing field is severely low in numbers, & many places will reimburse your debt in school, for hiring on with them! It would be another great way to serve my community. Maybe something with the medical field could be a new career field for you? You already have a lot of computer skills, so maybe there are some jobs with the medical field, you could benefit from your experience! I hope the best for you, & there are 1000's of job openings with the medical field, especially now, with Covid-19! I thought I would throw my two cents your way. Like I said before Good Luck, & I hope you find something soon!

Monumentally Important Question @Jacqueline Taylor !! This is a key pain point for seasoned workers who have been recently released from previous jobs and/or looking for career transition employment opportunities. btw... Too much developer experience, really! I remember a time where companies would go out of their way to create a new job opportunity in order to attain a highly experienced technical worker.

A good strategy is to compare the job descriptions you are pursuing in order to identify specific in-demand skill-sets, certification and preferred job qualification. Doing this will help you discover areas of training, schooling and certification opportunities.

Online career training platforms like EdX and Coursera offer free and affordable online career training programs you can take on at your won pace. Have you looked into any of these?

CareerOneStop is another excellent resource you can use to find local career center support and career training information. Another community member, Ajay A, was able to find a Logistics (CPIM or CSCP) Certification program through one of his local career resource centers, (online). Career resource are excellent for one-on-one career counseling, development workshops and career training. Use the careeronestop link above to identify you local centers and talk to a Career Navigator about your concerns.

Career transitioning can be a challenging process if you don't have a good strategy outlined @Jacqueline Taylor . Smart move on your part to get ahead of this and take action Now!
