Restaurant Worker / Designer / Marketing

I know a person who showed work experience for 3 years instead of 3 months. No one called or checked previous employer.

@Bill Branstetter Hello Bill, I filled out a few applications that requested references but whether or not they actually reached out is anyone’s guess at this point. I’m not a fan of the practice but it is what it is.

From the other side of the desk - I do not check references.

I was once trying to hand off a new department to my counter-part in Australia - she had transferred from a different department - she found every excuse to never be available for training, it dragged on for monts, was rude, knew nothing about digital marketing, graphics, HTML (all needed to do the job).

I mentioned the issues to our VP - His reply, "That's strange, she had wonderful references".

Sometimes a good reference is given to get rid of a bad worker.

All I can say is that it just depend upon the type of job you are applying for as to whether the employer will check your references.

I believe you should be checking References. With the right interview questions you can find out alot.

One company, in 30+ years, has called my references - I've been working with them almost 17 years now.

In the trucking industry it’s actually a DOT requirement for potential employers to contact former or current employers. They have to verify a driver’s experience by federal law. Unfortunately, those employers don’t have to respond of up to 30 days. I almost lost a job because of that when my former employer didn’t want to verify my employment because I received a better job opportunity.

They ask for them depending on the job and the level of the position.
