On an interview, what should your response be when the employer asks you how much you are expecting as a salary?

I smile & joke, "I have long understood whomever starts talking money first, loses..." then ask what is the range they are planning? think of a couple more deflections... if cornered into giving a number, give them a range for when you start & also a range for a year or two into the future, after you've proven what you can do.

Open to competitive rates

When asked about salary expectations in an interview, it's important to be prepared and do your research. You can respond by stating that you are flexible and open to discussing a salary that is competitive based on your skills and the responsibilities of the role. You can also mention that you are more focused on finding the right opportunity to grow professionally. Keep in mind that it's okay to ask about the salary range offered for the position.
