Experience for counseling positions
I have a BS in Psychology with a minor in Biology. I cannot get a job in my field because I do not have any hands on experience in counseling or any other mental health experience(except for my own personal experience.) I would really like to have a position in a Medication Assisted Treatment(MATS) facility. As a counselor or a Peer Recovery Specialist. Where do I go to get the training that most positions require. It is generally a minimum of 2 years working in the field. I am willing and ready to apply for any type of certification I may need, however, without the actual hands on training, I am ineligible for most positions. I am also willing to volunteer at a facility that encourages MATS and Peer Support Specialists, but cannot seem to find any volunteer opportunities either. If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate the help. Thank you.

Peer Recovery Specialist
I completed my training last September and have been volunteering at The Foundation for Recovery for the past year and was hoping to get employment working in the recovery field. If someone can direct me in a direction I would be deeply great full.

CASAC or not?
I have had very little success in securing a CD Counselor position although I CASAC T certification and eight years field experience. Therefore the criteria for employment is certainly not limited substance and alcohol dependency, it also includes all available fields related to social and community services, case management, mental health and peer support specialist. In a previous post within the Jobcase community someone a member probed the question of whether or not age discrimination could be the determining factor of which job candidate may or may not get hired. Most people of the younger sect of society do not understand that older people do not necessarily feel old and can work just hard as out counterparts.Just because a person younger doesn't make the full of fresh ideas, on the contrary most up and coming are still learning from seasoned veterans. Maybe potential employers think that productivity will be hindered or limited because of poor health or sickness, who knows? it"s a shame the way we all judge people by false assumptions and pre-determined outcomes, but what's really sad is that even though we recognize and affirm discriminatory practices all around, there is not that can been done especially since it is difficult to prove. Personally I am glad that I have the ability to work, however, what good is ability when there is no use for it?

Had an interview, was not qualified.
I had an interview last Thursday for CD Counselor in a county correctional facility, however. was called the next morning that I did not meet the qualifications because I do not have my Bachelor degree yet, I only lack 16 credits and will have it by May 2017. I was told everything else was fine and I would have been hired otherwise

Addiction Counseling - Drug Alcohol Prevention
I have am Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee I would also like to gain work experience in order to obtain Credentialed Prevention Specialists certification as a means to increase the likelihood of employment through acquired qualifications. looking ahead, another option is to become a certified teacher/instructor for the NYS Office or Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Any one of these three fields are doable and have the potential for employment.
