Why is it so difficult to get a job today?
Maybe it’s my age: maybe it’s because I can’t do QuickBooks because that wasn’t even around when I started working: maybe my résumé is too wordy and people just want to see bullet points of my experience. I’m beginning to think, however, the people who are reading my résumé lack the ability to make a good judgment call, because , after all, it sometimes takes a great deal of work to adequately assess my skills, my talent and you can’t always correctly assess Whether my skills listed will mean I’m going to show up on time for work. I’m trying to Dictate this article, for example, and For some inexplicable reason every five or six words are Capitalized without rhyme or reason. I think it’s just indicative of The level of today’s customer service. I swear this is true. Yesterday I went into my bank instead of at the ATM because my card didn’t appear to be working. I walked over to the teller to inform her that I didn’t know if it was my ATM card or if the ATM was indeed inoperable. There was laughter and evidently people eating in the next room, so I said rather loudly, “ Is the ATM working or is there something wrong with my card?” The teller responded: “oh, It’s not working right now. When we have a chance, one of us will go out and put a sign over the ATM.” This is The story of today’s working members. We have come to expect Very little from our customer service department in any industry. We can’t keep making mountains out of molehills but we need To establish a minimum service requirement. Why is my iPhone typing capital letters in the middle of a sentence? Because if you can read it evidently that is the best we can do and we all know that if you find someone who provides excellent customer service, you practically ask For their hand in marriage. When I worked full-time and had a career, I always attempted to provide excellent customer service and if someone was ready to walk away, unhappy, I would always ask them what I could do to provide them with the service that they wanted. If they owed the company $20, And they didn’t think that they did owe the company $20, I would give or lend them the $20 from out of my wallet. It truly takes so little to provide customer satisfaction because our expectations have sunk so low. It’s not me; it’s everyone and everything. When I worked at Macy’s, if we left the security tag on a piece of clothing, we were instructed to go to the customers house on our own time and remove the tag. Today the customer is expected to return to the store and maybe if they’re lucky, someone will remove the tag for them. I may be considered older, but I can do a job better than most 20-year-olds. And if I can’t do a good job, I will quit or ask to be trained. Don’t throw my resume in the garbage.
