My Job Fair Experience

I’ve gone to a couple job fairs. I did not prepare for the first one at all. I had no idea what to wear so I had a wrinkled shirt and skate shoes with no belt on a pair of stained khakis. I’d printed 5 copies of my resume that had a couple spelling and date errors.. AND I’m pretty sure I gave every person whose hand I shaked a bath since I was so nervous. You could say it went terribly.

The second one was SO much better. I met with someone at my college’s career center to spruce up my resume, printed about 50 copies and put them in a nice padfolio. I picked out a blue button-down, matching dress pants & jacket, and shined my shoes. I even brought a small microfiber cloth that I kept in my right pocket so I could discreetly dry off my hand before handshakes. It went so much better - after following up with the few companies, I had two interviews lined up!

I would definitely make sure you prepare for a job fair. Trying to wing it WILL NOT work for you - there will be someone just as smart, and as qualified as you for the job who prepared more and will get chosen over you.

Why should we….?

One of the most common questions asked during an interview or even at a job fair is…

Why should we hire you?

Answer these 5 questions to help you plan what to say!

1- What are the three strongest reasons I am a great fit for this job?

2- What are some positive things I can say about the company, and how can I connect what they do with what I can bring to them?

3- Why do I really want this job beyond having a steady paycheck and perks?

4- What are three AWESOME things I did in my previous position that I can also offer in this new role?

5- What is the EXACT job description (make sure to write it down) and how do MY skills match up with it? Be as specific as possible.

Answering these questions will help you feel prepared to go in with some great things to say!

So...why do you think an employer should hire YOU?

Don’t forget these!

Hey BOSTON!!!

It’s job fair season, so let’s get you prepared! Check out the list below to help you get ready and all set to GO!

-Print and pack at least 30-40 copies of your polished and updated resume. You will want to hand these out to all the employers you are interested in working for. It’s always best to print more than you need than not enough!

-Order some [business cards] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/cb795458-c78b-5403-abca-08908c09d94e). They make for a great “So nice to meet you” moment when you hand one to the potential employer. They will also help them remember who you are once the fair is over!

-Pack a pencil, pen, and a notebook. You will want to take notes! They will come in very handy later on when you get home and the whole job fair is a blur. List the company name and what you thought about each one and specific information right after you meet with them. Even jotting down something as simple as, "They have great benefits" will help jog your memory later on.

-Tuck a package of mints in your pocket or purse to grab throughout the job fair to keep your throat from getting dry and your breath fresh. You will be talking a ton!

-Bring and show off your positive attitude! Employers LOVE to see smiles and feel a strong handshake. If you’re nervous, take some deep breaths before approaching someone. It’s always better to take a few seconds to calm down so you can show your best self!

So how was YOUR last job fair experience?
