Losing unemployment benefits.
Hi everyone, I’m being recalled to work, I do not have an issue going back. However during this pandemic my mom showed corona symptoms , I took her to get tested but fir 3 weeks she was sick even when they told her she tested negative. Normally while I’m at work my mom is taking care of my elderly grandmother who lives with us , and my father who has dementia. Then I take over when I get home. My mom still is not feeling well and she will not be able to take care of them while I’m at work. I’m in the process of finding care for all three during the day while I’m gone but due to Michigan still being on lock down I have been unsuccessful. If I say I refused my job for a god reasonable cause will I lose my benefits? #coronavirus

Great for you, I'm a long-term substitute teacher and school does not begin until September. There is not a cushion for me to fall back on at this time. The extra $600 kept me from falling behind in rent, food and paying my monthly phone bill. It was definitely less income than what I actually made in a pay period. I just graduated with my MBA recently, there is not much available in the area where I reside due to COVID-19... Location, Location, Location!

Here in Ohio we have a seperate portal set up. Even tho some people got approved through the original portal. And if that's the case covid19 is not a good enough reason to not go back to work the original portal here will stop benefits.
The PUA portal it ask are you home sick taking care of some one sick has anyone tested positive etc etc that portal you can said you home taking care of ppl who have symptoms they don't even have to be diagnosed you could have symptoms. You can keep benefits then

Make sure you speak with a representative. Tell them your story. Yu would be surprised how lenient they are and they can easily look up the people liing in your house and see that you are stretched very thin. I went through a very similar situation w both parents and then my mother in law. Just keep telling yourself that your are doing the most important job, and that is caring for family. Have no regrets. God bless you and your family. And take the help from people who offer it!!!

I’m not sure but I was told that if you say you have a issue going back to work either because you are sick or you are taking care of someone I think I read it on the site say your mom has Covid and you were taking care of her that should work good luck.

God bless you!

FMLA, has if you refuse to return you stand a chance of collecting benefits that may have to be repaid. Better to use FMLA. You won’t get the same amount of money as UI but at least it’s something.

Write and call your congressperson. They need to know what people like you are going through and a staffer might help you. If no answer from anyone, write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Sometimes you have to really squeak before anyone will pay attention to you

Have you considered using your FMLA benefits? You can take up to 3 more months off for yourself or your loved ones.

This is a question for your local unemployment office. ( If you can get ahold of them) the federal money is dependent on you qualifying for your state benefit. Every state is going to have different opinions on this. You're going to have to spend the two or three on hold to talk to somebody at your state unemployment office. If they don't have an answer that works for you. Call back a couple more times, and or escalate the matter to talk to a supervisor.
Anna, good luck with the PUA Portal.
