Chipping away at Age-ism, little by little.

Age-ism can be rampant in the workplace. Usually subtle and invisible. Sometimes overt (I know first hand on multiple occasions in the past year alone). It can hit us all at some point. As research comes to bear this ‘ism’ too shall recede. Little by little- we’ll get there.
Check out this article that is one of many that highlights research which is chipping away at old myths and current isms. Enlightened employers get it. If you run into someone who doesn’t - don’t let ‘em get you down. Hang in there. Believe in yourself and your talents. And prove the ‘ism-embracers wrong! I am confident that we will drive ageism into mass retreat over the 2020’s. And the resilience of those staring it in face and not letting it intimidate them will be the surest path to success. Join us in not being phased by Age-ists. Either by not letting it get you down as a victim of it, and to vow to avoid slipping into practicing it (and by the way - that goes for ageism vs. younger as well as older - but more on that another day ) #ageism #StrongerTogether

Debra Ethan, Hey Kudos to you my dear. I wish I had you as a friend near by. So positive. and with such message out to those that are on the "given up" category. I am well at 70 working, working out, trying very hard to eat 80%-20% just dealing with 9 lbs above my own desired weight other than that it is refreshing to read your writings today. thank you have fun,

Yes, job seekers should NOT slip into practicing age-ism & they should NOT buy into it. DO NOT think your age prevents you from getting job offers. If you go forward, confident in your skills & experience, you will find a job. I, myself, don't buy into age-related thinking. I didn't buy into thinking I was 'over the hill' when I turned 30. An acquaintance told me she knew it was time to get her hair cut short when she turned 30. That's nuts. I worked part time in a pharmacy at one time & many times had to check people's ID's. I was AMAZED at the women who had "given up". Many women were 10 & 15 years younger than me, but weren't taking care of themselves, & I'm not talking weight. I'm talking about things they could have helped. Of course I didn't know their story but DONT GIVE UP on yourself just because you reach 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90!!! We're worth more than how we treat ourselves sometimes! Today, when seeking a new job, I take a shower, fix my hair, put on make-up, grab my best blazer & go out the door. I also have a portfolio full of work samples along with several well thought out questions. I look & act like a star. How can I NOT get the job? Since I'm older, I've been there-done that. Smart HR reps & bosses know older workers have a lot to offer because of their experience. Most are past the childbearing years & maybe a bit more settled than younger counterparts - not that our young workers have less to offer, they don't. Today's young people are smart, energetic & amazing. But good things come from being older without losing the traits of the younger. So don't tell yourself it is because you're older, don't believe that. Look at yourself, your resume, your portfolio & see what needs updating. Do thorough homework before an interview & then go out there & get that job!!!

I was informed by a recruiter this week that I was overqualified for a position. I met every requirement and I had someone who worked at the company to reach out to the recruiter as well as hiring manager. I even lowered my salary recommendations knowing what I was up against. I have heard from many of my peers who are in my age group mid-50’s who are receiving this same feedback as we.. this particular job denial was a blow to my ego. I never thought I would be in this kind of predicament.
