@Joseph Williams Hi Joseph, I’d definitely reach out to the HR department, perhaps do some research and see if they were just in their handling if your situation. I’m sorry to hear that happened and hope this helps 👍🏼

Registered Nurse at Audie L Murphy Veterans Hospital Emergency Department

Was this during your two year probationary period? I was “separated” 4 days before my probationary period ended without appropriate due process. One week later I was diagnosed with two grade 4 brain tumors (GBM). Now my wife and I get to traverse through brain cancer without an income or insurance. Mind you I’ve been an ER nurse for 24 years. 18 1/2 years working for the government. 1/12 years left to retire and this happens. If you can help it, the VA employment is sketchy at best. Never trust them. I hope this helps.

Hey there, if it's an "at will" state, meaning that they don't need a real reason to terminate you, there's not much that can be done unless they blatantly lied on the reasons that you were terminated. At will employment is always risky because often, there is no just cause to be terminated. As my old boss said, you can literally be fired for the shoes that you wear. It's simplified but you get her point.

I would recommend reaching out to HR for clarity on your termination.

Good luck to you.

First let me say "my condolences to you and your family."

Your company policy should outline Death in the Family and should adhere to that policy.

You should always notify your company of a death in your family and you should adhere to the company's policies regarding notifications etc.

My question to you is:

  • Did you notify your company of the deaths?
  • Did you official take time off from work?
  • Were your official time off from work approved?
  • Did you return to work in the allotted time frame?
  • Did you have a medical doctor excuse keeping you out of work?
  • Did you notify your work of such excuse?
  • If you have an answer for all these questions I do not see why you would be fired if you followed every questions I asked.
  • You have the right to grieve your termination if you have such policy in place.
  • If not
  • You have the right to file a case against your company with EEOC

I'm sorry to hear about your difficult situation. It's important to take care of your well-being during this time. Reach out to your HR department to see if there are any support services available to employees going through challenging circumstances. Consider seeking counseling or support from a therapist or support group. When you're ready, start exploring job opportunities on Jobcase, Indeed, LinkedIn, and other job search providers to find a new role that aligns with your skills and goals. Take your time to heal and focus on your overall well-being before transitioning back into the workforce.
