He took a SHOT in the middle of the interview....

Yup, you read that right!

A few years back, I had a really unique experience during a first interview... long story short, I was interviewing for a hip start-up company that took "lax environment" to a whole new level!! In the middle of asking question, the interviewer took out a whiskey bottle from the cabinet behind him and offered me a shot! I politely declined, but at that point I was really hoping the conversation would be over soon! Lol

Once while I was interviewing someone for a role they commented to me that they were surprised how excited I was about my job at the company considering the product I was working on was going to be sunset at the end of the year. This was certainly news to me and after the interview, walked into my boss' office and asked if it was true. In the end, they didn't get the job and my excitement was rewarded as we tripled our growth in the product that was to be sunset the following years.

Director

One of my directors told me a story that she was hit on while interviewing candidates.. The "prospect" was very explicit and blunt, like...

"You are very hot! Do you work out a lot? Would I get one on one training and guidance?"

Not clear if he got hired or not..

The position was for a very competitive position with a lot of "perks" and great compensation. My director at the time was in her 40s and the applicant was probably 23. Maybe he was trying to edge out the competition?

Anywho.. it was a funny story.. The fact she shared that story shows how open our team was at the time at a evening get together.

It is also pretty ironic because usually the genders would be reversed in most scenarios.. But with the "ME TOO" movement I'm sure most folks are pretty cautious now a days.

I had the same thing happen when I was interviewing with one of the Big 4. The Partner had a minibar and small fridge in his office. Asked me if I wanted something to drink - I said I would have a coke or glass of water and he countered with “How about a whiskey?” I passed but he had his drink and then another. Ah - and so many other experiences that don’t border on “illegal” but blatantly cross the line.

Retired college instructor looking for part time work

I once had a lunch interview with the Director of Education for Computer Learning Center. At that time, I had a 2 year old child. He asked me if I planned to have more children. I realize now that's an illegal question, but I merely said, I haven't decided yet. I got the job, but it turned out badly. He was a mean and demeaning person who fired me over the phone when my kid and I were both sick with the flu. This is now illegal due to the FMLA.

Are you serious! That's a little too laid back work culture for me. Do you think that was a test @Elyssa Duncan ?
