Soooo just wondering, WHY is it ok for an employer to fire you at the drop of a hat whenever they feel like it, but yet I have to give a two weeks notice??

I think from an employee perspective if you were doing a bad job they don't want to have to keep you around for two weeks, but on the flip side if you want to leave they need time to replace you. Of course I have totally quit and said screw them I am not staying here another second!

I feel that of an employer has the right to fire you for not doing your job, then we have the right to fire the company for not doing their job. Ie: if I say I’m going to do ABC and the employer says ok in return I’ll give you XYZ of they fail to follow through then what is the difference?

You don’t HAVE TO give two weeks notice, it’s just common curtesy. Just like an employer laying you off giving you notice, or even severance pay if your lucky. However getting FIRED typically means you did something wrong that warrants the employer releasing you. Of course they’re going to let you go immediately in that situation.

If you want to leave a job on "good" terms... You give them the courtesy of giving them a two-week notice. This way if you ever find yourself needing to go back, you can. However, no one can make you come to work if you don't want to. Their ability to "fire" you or "lay you off" at any given moment is to protect themselves if in case you ever become a liability to them. You becoming a liability doesn't always have to do with your job performance.. it can be a result of the business going down and they can no longer afford to keep you there. It's unfortunate.. and the rules they make up are ALWAYS going to be in favor of the "company" but it is what it is when you want to find work.

Technically you don't! If you live in a "right to work state" where they can basically fire you because they woke up on the wrong side of the bed, you too can wake up on the wrong side of the bed and say "I QUIT!" The reason why most ppl will give the 2 week notice is so that they can use their former employer as a job reference. Tho legally a company calling in for a reference can not listen or ask certain questions, what they can ask is "would you rehire this person? And if no why not?" They can then say because they left the company abruptly and without notice, which isn't a reply you want.

I know what you mean when asking this question. The only way I can seem to conclude is that maybe if or when an employer let's an employee go and it's immediate then the employer is at the level of frustration or at the place of impass equivalent to an employee being so fed up that they quit and walk out which is immediate. When we give a two week notice that is typically when things are going good and all is well within the work environment.

You don't. You can up and leave if you find a better job. Don't tell anyone about looking though.

In California, employees are not required to give notice they are resigning from or quitting their job. That may impact their ability to apply for unemployment insurance.

I had two daughters 15 months apart. This is a watercolor of them in 1979. Kids argue about everything.. so when I prepared breakfast always poured the orange juice I would pour it NOT evenly. I told them "Get used to it, life is not fair. Do not expect life to be fair. That advice has served them well. They are now 40 and very successful. They worked very hard and NEVER expected life to be fair.
