High School Principal at Durham Catholic District School Board

I was employed as a correctioal officer and a classification officer. I worked in a maximum security remand institution and ws proud to bring in programs for female inmates. I was also proud to devlop a reading program for male inmates. Philosophy?

I believe that people need to be responsible for their actions. I also think that it is incumbent upon staff to help indiv to deelop thetools and skils they need to return to society. #jobsearch

I agree totally I Just returned home from a little trip to the correctional facility myself and people like you or what they need more than a correctional system to help people because inmates are people to everybody can make a mistake so I thank you so much

Speaking as a person who spent 22 years in a Texas prison for a crime I did not commit. Correctional Officers and classification officers' play no part whatsoever in regard to rehabilitation. All they do is harass and enforce the rules. Most to the extreme. Rehabilitation in Tx. does not exist. Unless one wants to learn how to beat on the ground 8 hours a day with a garden hoe, pick cotton or sweep and mop the floors. There are so-called trade schools. However, what is taught is useless in today's society. I worked 10 years in the prison laundry as the machine mechanic. Thinking I was learning a trade where I could find good employment once released. However, no one will hire me due to my criminal record and I have no actual work history since 1987. Maybe you should re-think how proud you are.

I believe it depends on the level of offense. Inmates who are serving life sentences or expecting to re-enter neighborhoods beyond an marketable age probably don't give this idea weight. Otherwise, inmates earn certifications and other skills that can get them started on the right road. Agree or disagree?

Thanks for taking the lead and showing us how to give back to our society. Our penal system should help the inmates develop skills that will allow them to matriculate back into society. Otherwise what is the alternative when they get out...returning to crime?
