Would tuition reimbursement benefits designed for children encourage more employee loyalty?
Salaries & hourly wages are only a small part of the story when it comes to recruiting and maintaining the right employees. This #BostonGlobe article features a #BostonCollege #Custodian’s family #SuccessStory made possible through a tuition benefit plan offered to BC employees and their families. This would be an excellent model to grant more higher education access to low income families and companies would also benefit from more employee retention, loyalty, and lower recruiting cost. Sounds like a good idea but companies won't spring the $$ for it though. Colleges and Universities can do that because it's education is their main product/service. It's like working for a cable company and getting free cable services as an employee.

With the average college tuition cost $20k per year this would be an excellent long term benefit.
Janitors, Custodial and Maintenance people are some of the most dedicated people around. Many don't get paid much, but they truly are important to the functioning of a successful institution. They know how the "guts" of your buildings and how they work and can help avoid and avert major issues. Many know that their work is very important to the organization and students and the people who use their facilities. An organization that truly cares for its employees is one that gets loyalty. Organizations that think anyone can be a custodian and offer a revolving door don't get loyalty. Unfortunately people who don't make much money don't have the freedom to leave without great sacrifice. If you look under the surface of the buildings in their maintenance shops and areas, you will see the true nature of the organization. If the maintenance staff aren't cared for, others on staff aren't cared for either. If senior staff bad mouths the maintenance organization, they will probably have something bad to say about any other section in the organization. Your people are your greatest asset. If you care for your people and are sincere, it will spread. My father was a custodian in a high school for over twenty years and when he retired they sent a limousine to take him to his party. Students in art classes presented him with pictures they made of him and a sculptured bust. I know he had a great impact on the students and that they loved him as did the staff. Take care of your people, they will flower and it wil spread to your staff, customers and others.
