Age Discrimination During Your Job Search
Biospace recently published a great article with tips on how best to position yourself with employers during the online application process.
"Don’t draw attention to your age in your resume, social media profiles, or in conversation." - Biospace
Article Highlights:
- Remove any graduation dates or years you received specialized training that are over 10 years ago from your resume or social media profiles.
- Think about what additional training, courses, or certifications you can attain to help you stand out from other candidates.
- Don’t directly answer illegal questions. “How old are you?” is an example of an illegal question. “Are you planning to retire soon?” is another example.
- While you don’t want to ramble on and on about your years of experience (that points back to drawing attention to your age), you do want to highlight your key areas of expertise, accomplishments, and honors.
- What you can do is remain positive and make a point to eliminate any negative self-talk or beliefs. Read More...

Even when I leave off dates highlighting attention to possible age, I am asked to complete that information in an additional request. Especially education. I an constantly asked about when I completed my degree. Should I remove it from the resume?

Great Question Vickie! If you find that employers are reaching back out to request employment and education dates then definitely include those on your resume and application profile. The last thing you want to do is create obstacles that might delay your application processing time and/or discourage employers from pursing your candidacy for employment.
Other Jobcasers have expressed higher online application success using functional resume formats instead of highly visible dated chronological formats.
