What will it take to get a part time job.
Good evening everyone, I am Kiersten Carlton. I just joined in a group today for people with disabilities. This is my first post or conversation in the group All Things Disability. Through out my life I have had some disabilities, such as a speech impairment, learning disability, and in my adult life I was diagnosis with bipolar one disorder, along with going through two ankle surgeries one on each ankle. After going through the two surgeries, one on each of my ankles, I now have to use a walking cane to help with my walking. Due to having those surgeries done, I am now limited to my physical abilities when it comes to working. Those work restrictions have definitely changed the job abilities that I can do on a job, the restrictions are from my doctor that performed the two surgeries are, 1) walk 15-20 minutes 2) no ladders, no lifting, can do 10-15 lbs, 3) no pushing or pulling. My primary doctor and the doctor that did the surgeries to each of my ankles recomend to me for a job that would allow me to sit. I was employed with Walmart for almost fifteen years and doing my time with Walmart, I did work with a job coach during that employment time with Walmart. I am currently working with the Department of Rehabilitation Services and Aging in the Williamsburg, Virginia area. I am also in the process of trying to fill out the jobcase resume to search, get ideas for future part time employment to supplement with my monthly disability, and to assist with my caseworker from the Department of Rehabilitation Services and Aging to work together on future possible employment. I am truly grateful and appreciative of any ideas, suggestions, and support while unemployed.
Hi Kiersten Carlton
I'm sorry to hear that you've had to go through so many hardships! It seems like you really enjoyed working at Walmart, is there any way you could speak with your boss about adapting your shifts/workload to your accommodations?
