Any advice for someone about to start college but who doesn't know what they want to do professionally?

You don't have to choose right away. Get some of your pre-requisite classes knocked out and everything should fall into place. Follow your dreams. If you ain't happy with your job, you won't be happy with your life. Remember that when it comes time to choose!

@Bill Branstetter A business degree is universal for most industries. But I also recommend getting into an industry that is in high demand. Keep in mind doing what you love or passionate about doesn’t always pay dividends. Aside from not knowing what to do career wise I suggest working for a company that has a tuition reimbursement program. If they can’t get tuition reimbursement, I recommend going to a community college to finish their general education and transferring over to a university. It’s cheaper that way and student debt will be minimized. I know people that make good money, but don’t ever see it because of their student loans.

That's what General Ed's are for.. You have almost 2 years of generic courses before your major becomes a factor in your educations.

I wouldn't waste your money on college until you figure out what you want. Why take prerequisite classes if you don't know if you need a degree. Look into other educational options or certifications. Ask yourself "what do I enjoy doing now for fun, work or volunteer, that makes me happy and I'm pretty good at it". Then look into all the options to that passion. I changed schools so many times because I didn't know what I wanted either. But the pressure was on to go to college. Such a waste of money on so many classes that you don't need yet for Ed to take if you want a degree.

I would suggest you try to complete an internship if possible. Try to spend some time at your school's Career Services and take some personality tests if possible.

Try to keep in touch with your professors so you can hopefully ask them for a recommendation letter if possible.

If you find technical school more appealing and have a specific field in mind, consider pursuing that path to gain practical skills and clarity about your career. It's also okay to explore general education courses at college to discover your interests before committing to a specific career path.
