Buggy before the horse...?

I have a phone interview with a recruiter from Union Home Mortgage on Tuesday that I am excited about and well qualified for but still, remembering that it doesn't mean I will be chosen "but a good possibility". My husband was diagnosed with Non-Hodkins Lymphoma from using the product Round Up weed killer almost 2 years ago, he is in remission now but, the type he has is terminal and his doctor said it will come back eventually and when it does, it will happen quickly ( there is a life expectancy of 2 to 3 years for his type of cancer )... I have continued working at my current job which I've held for alittle over 13 years but have not had anyone to offer me a better opportunity ( I've been looking for better opportunities for about 3 years ) so my question is... Do I accept the offer from Union Home Mortgage if they offer me the position... OR stay at my current position so I can take FMLA when and the cancer does come back because you do have to be at a job for 1250 hours before you can claim FMLA and I have no idea if he has 3 months or 1 year. I am only at $12.16 an hour after over 13 years at my current job....I know I should be grateful I have a job even at my small paycheck and I am but I want better! I have to say also that my husband has medical through my job but Union Home Mortgage offers medical after being employed after 1 month. I am sorry for sounding un-grateful if I do come across that way... I'm not, I pray to God and thank him for mine and my husband's life everyday along with my other blessings... we both have children from other marriages.

Hi Rhenda Nieto-Miller , three years searching for a better opportunity is quite an investment in time. It sounds like you're ready to take a leap forward despite the potential challenges you may face at home in the future.

Benefit coverage and PTO usually sets in after the 90 day grace period but I suggest you make a list of all the "must have's" you think you will be requiring to support your husband down the road so you can have a point of reference should you get to the job offer negotiation stage with this interview/job opportunity.

Keep in mind that your still at the beginning stages of the hiring process. So don't get too pre-occupied with benefit coverage and long term planing until you've had an opportunity to learn more about the position and company culture.

Good Luck on your interview tomorrow and please keep us posted on the outcome!

Rhenda Nieto-Miller sorry to hear about your husbands illness. I don't think your not being ungrateful at all. The personal circumstances you/re trying to prepare for are very serious. Take a look at the FMLA work hours and get some clarification. I believe its a total of 1250 hours within a 12 month period.

Your FMLA grace period doesn't reset itself if you go from one employer to another as long as the new employer is covered. Double check the rules.

I encourage you to go for that new job opportunity and pursue it wholeheartedly if you discover that you like what they have to offer during the hiring process. Best of Luck with the job interview. I hope they offer you everything you want and a whole lot more!
