Reliable Transportation Question?

What do employers consider to be reliable transportation? I see this question frequently asked on applications but I don’t know if managers want to know if I own a car or if I can get to the job on time. I don’t have a car right now but the bus system around my house and in the city gets me pretty much wherever I need to go. Would it be misleading on an application if I answer Yes or disqualify me from a job #interview if I tell them I don’t own my own car?

Reliable is consistent. Having a car that breaks down, relying on a friend, not knowing the bus schedule well enough would not be forms of reliable transportation.

Having a working car, a reliable bus service, a bicycle, or good knees would be reliable sources. They mostly want to know if you can make it to work on time.

Omar, In most cases reliable transportation simply means that you are able to be on time everyday. We don't care how you get here, as long as you get here. I would answer "yes" to that question. Keep in mind however, if the job requires you to travel at all, not having your own vehicle could be an issue. So, make sure you ask in the interview "does this position require travel?"

Fork Lift Operator Delivery Agent at Pilot Freight Services

Hello, personally, I see that employers are just trying to inquire if you will be able to make it work on time consistently. I havey license suspended for 3 more of the 5 year revocation & I DO NOT have solid transportation at whatever time I need it. The only reason I do for my job is because I work for my dad & his brother, owners operators of pilot freight Kansas city, & I make it to work on time with my dad every morning & do not cause any delays or disruption in our service to our customers.jf you have a way to and from your place of employment you should be very well okay with marking "yes" or telling them you have "reliable transportation" as long as your ride has a trustworthy healthy running vehicle.

the question is asked because so many upon accepting a job offer use many excuses for not showing up for work. One is car broken down, not reliable transportation. It's easier to let people go for poor attendance when it was brought up in the hiring stage. "you were aware that being reliable was important, you haven't been reliable so we are going to try to find someone that can be reliable."

Omar, If you are applying for a specific job that requires you to drive to various locations , then it is referring to your personal ownership of a vehicle. But if it isn't then basically they are asking if you have any form of reliable transportation to get to your scheduled shifts if hired. Also lots of businesses use a basic form of an application and the questions are the same on all of them, it just depends on if all the questions apply to you or not and of course if they don't apply to you, you put N/A or either put needed information. The hiring management knows there are some applicants that do not own their own vehicles. But that doesn't mean they can't be hired if they fit the position completely. And if ever in doubt, ask a member of management.

Thanks for you concern, Denise

They don't need to know what your mode of transportation is. They only need to know that you'll be at work on time. Then..., quietly work through all humble moments. In truth, a public system is actually quite convenient, cost effective, & desireable. Owning a car carries with it 'continual costs'.
