I went to prison 4 years ago and it changed my life and I haven't been in trouble since but I still can't get a good job because I'm a felon. #advice #backgroundcheck #jobsearch #workfromhome
@Shelli Phipps, I’m sorry for the struggle that you are currently experiencing. I know it can gnaw at your confidence, which will create a very unsettling existence. But remember, it’s only temporary.
I commend you for your ability to endure and step back out into the free-world with an improved mind. That says a lot about your character, a trait that will take you distances.
If I may suggest, practice not referring to yourself as a felon; that is behind you, a place there is no u-turn that takes you back. This little change can reap rewards as to how you feel about yourself.
Background checks are going to be inevitable with most jobs, including work-from-home positions. Depending on the type of position, each background check will be different as to what the employer is checking.
Research the company and only send a resume to those that your background won’t be an issue. Someone with a bank robbery or embezzlement charge in their past will find it difficult to be hired into a position dealing with finances. Regardless of the changes inside of us, we must remember that business owner feels he or she is taking more of a chance on us than hiring someone without that past.
I’m including a couple of links below that will give you guidance and knowledge you may not have thought of yet. My best advice is to create a schedule and go about finding a job a job in itself. And research, research, research before applying. Try researching in three’s, three companies at a time.
If there is anything I can help you with as far as creating a plan, don’t hesitate to reach out. There are many that browse these pages who are also willing to help.
Good luck, Shelli. I know you can do it. Second Chances Resource Center
@Shelli Phipps Hello Shelli, they really shouldn’t be holding your past against you, sorry to hear that this is happening. Where are you located? Do they offer any programs for previously incarcerated individuals? A friend of mine went through a similar situation where I’m located and was able to secure employment through a program. I hope everything works out, let me know if you have any questions and good luck! 👍🏼
The government has a program for that
Try parole officer, they can place you!
I am not sure where you are located however, there is a company in Atlanta that only work with people with a felony or a prior record. They help with training, placement, and any other help. Kroger is one of the people that will employ felons.
There are a lot of companies willing to give second chances. A lot of companies do not ask the big question anymore. When interviewing ask the person does your company believe in second chance employment.
I'm a felon also there is No Excuse for not getting a job start off with temp agencies they will put you in positions that you can't get on your own I been home 18yrs and I pray 🙏 and thank God for bad & the good 🙏 I've done way more time than you I'm afraid to go back I want live life too the fullest you can do anything

@Shelli Phipps, SC is a ban the Box state meaning the question on applications about criminal history is unlawful on applications. This gives the applicant an opportunity to talk to hiring managers about their convictions AFTER a job offer is extended. Knowing how to present your circumstances is key in how a recruiter will respond to your explanation..
