Age Discrimination

#ageism Wow! So glad I came across this site! I thought it was just me! I've been a nurse for many years and now can't get hired. You ever heard of a nurse not being able to get a job? It's my age! cause I have credentials out the ying yang! Unbelievable!

There's HOPE! I did finally get hired thankfully! Being out of work for several months was very worrisome indeed! After three applications for various positions I agreed to work the night shift and was hired. My next plan was to apply to Lowe's. A huge pay cut but I like working with people and it's a good company. No, I'm not going to be doing the type of nursing I'm used to (operating room) but I'm just thankful! Hang in there and be open minded. Very strange times we're living in but for us "Boomers" it was strange times in the late 60's & 70's! We're still here!

Jr. UX/UI designer approaching a UX design bootcamp. I am obsessed with design and how that influences behavior and buying decisions.

I would invite you to work with a recruiter. I know of three women who had a similar experience and they did well with a recruiter...

Maybe it's just me and everyone can hate me if you wish. I'm 68 and just got a new job. When I apply for a job, I don't worry about my age. Why should I? I can't do anything about it. I do what I can. I research the company thoroughly. I develop questions and talking points. If I can find a bio on the top people in the company, including the person who will be interviewing me, I do that. I go in super prepared. I have a portfolio I take with me with all my questions and talking points outlined. I take a small binder containing my work samples. I include Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe InDesign, Visio. I also include examples of things I accomplished or created that took initiative, that took organization and focus. I have some writings that have been published in company newsletter and I take those. I have had video and in person interviews and I give it all I've got. If I have some misgivings about the organization or the interviewer or the person I would report to, I know I don't have to take the job if it's offered. I have my standards, too, just like the companies do. Finally, I go in looking as good as I can. I dress professionally, I walk in with a spring in my step, I make eye contact, I am excited about the organization and the position and I'm happy to be there. If I "felt" old, like my age was a problem, I would be defeated before going in - and it would show. Sorry, folks. I think one reason I have a youthful attitude is I have never bought into the age thing. It starts when we turn 30. We tell ourselves we're over the hill. Sweethearts - we are just getting started!!! But if we believe and buy into that stuff - we will turn into that stuff. And why should anyone hire us? Really, think about your attitude and how it may be affecting your chances. Just saying, and, again, you can ALL hate me. The good news (for you) is you have each other to commiserate with and since it's all about your age - and you can't do anything about your age - you don't have to do anything at all!!!

#ageism I have been unemployed since September 2020, like you I have 25 years as a nurse with a MBA as well. I have completed so many applications. I never thought I would see the day were it was difficult for nurses to find employment

The age discrimination has increased even more now since covid19 companies really aren’t looking at credentials anymore like what are they really afraid of! We need our jobs more than ever now and probably more reliable than the younger sectors..just saying 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am experiencing the same thing. I worked for one company for 24 years and now have been unemployed for 10 months. I keep getting emails telling that they have gone with another applicant.

Yes, sad but true. I have seen several applications where they ask for the year in which you graduated high school. Not really fooling anyone.

Here is a way they can get around it. They just say you don't fit into the culture of the people with whom you will be working. One example I saw was all of the potential coworkers were young people in their 20's and early 30's, some single, some just starting their families. I am a grandfather many times over, so I was told they would not be comfortable working with me because I could not identify with them and vice versa. In reality, it is a form of age discrimination, but legal.
