Ever wondered what it’s like to work at Sam’s Club?

Many entry-level positions open up for Sam’s Club on a regular basis. But it’s important to know what to expect if you decide to apply and work there.

Here’s a breakdown of Sam’s Club benefits you can expect, whether you’re a full-time or part-time hourly employee.

What is Sam’s Club?, or Sam’s West Inc, is a division of Walmart. Founded in 1983, this is a membership-only retail warehouse store.

Members can access items at lower prices than they would at other stores, but they need to pay $45 a year in order to do so (or $100 a year for the Plus membership).

So, when you work at Sam’s Club, you’re also working for Walmart.

You can find part-time jobs in the store, but some full-time jobs are also available when the store needs someone on a full-time basis.

Sam’s Club offers several entry-level positions, including:

  • Cashier

  • Customer service associate

  • Maintenance associate

  • Merchandise and stocking associate

  • Fresh food associate

When you work at Sam’s Club, you’ll typically get paid hourly and not get a yearly salary. Keep in mind that you must be at least 18 years old to work there, unlike at Walmart, which requires a minimum of 16 years of age.

So what perks can you expect when you work at Sam’s Club?

Let’s break it down.

1. Sam’s Club employee health benefits

One of the best parts of working for Sam’s Club stores is that part-time employees get access to health insurance. However, you need to work at least 24 hours a week over the course of a year with no breaks in employment longer than 13 weeks.

As a full-time hourly employee, you can get health care coverage for yourself, your spouse, and your dependent children. This is also the case if you get promoted to management or get a salaried position.

On the other hand, if you’re a part-time or temporary employee or a part-time truck driver, you can only cover yourself and your dependent children. Your spouse doesn’t get coverage.

You’ll be able to choose your coverage level when you become eligible. The types of insurance you can receive include:

  • Medical

  • Dental

  • Vision

  • Critical illness and accident

  • Accidental death and dismemberment

In addition to these health benefits, full-time hourly associates are eligible for maternity benefits after working for at least one year.

You can take ten weeks of maternity leave, plus six weeks of parental leave. Parents who adopt a child will also get six weeks of parental leave.

2. Sam’s Club employee financial benefits

The average hourly rate for a Sam’s Club employee is $12.71. Keep in mind that this changes based on the role you want to get.

For example, cashiers tend to make less ($11.98 per hour on average) than a stocking associate ($13.38 per hour on average).

If you work in the warehouse, certain positions have a higher salary. For example, stockers make $14.57 per hour on average.

You’ll get other financial benefits, such as:

  • 401(k)

  • Paid time off, including vacation, holidays, and sick leave

  • Business travel accident insurance

  • Company-paid life insurance (full-time employees only)

  • Optional life insurance for yourself and your dependents

  • Short-term and long-term disability

You can also receive a bonus of up to $1,000 based on sales if you work as an associate.

For the 401(k), you can contribute between 1%–50% of your pay for each pay period. Once you work at least 1,000 hours during your first year, you can receive matching contributions for up to 6% of your annual pay.

If you work overtime hours or take paid leave, these hours also count towards the 1,000 total.

3. Sam’s Club employee career benefits

When you get your foot in the door at Sam’s Club, you’ll have the opportunity to move around to different positions in the store.

For example, if you work at the cafe, you could switch over to the produce section or become a greeter. This way, you can develop your career in the direction you want it to go.

Sam’s Club also offers flexible schedules. If your availability changes, you can submit a new schedule availability form and change your hours.

4. Unique Sam’s Club employee benefits

Sam’s Club associates can purchase Walmart stock through payroll deductions. They can purchase between $2–$1,000 on every bi-weekly paycheck.

The company will match $0.15 for every dollar you spend to purchase stock for up to $1,800 each year.

Employees also get a free Sam’s Club membership card. They don’t get additional discounts, except 10% off produce.

Finally, Sam’s Club associates can go to college and get an associate or bachelor’s degree for only $1 a day. They can also get their high school diploma or learn a new language at no cost.

What is Sam’s Club employee benefit eligibility timeline?

For all the health benefits, your eligibility timeline will depend on whether you’re a full-time or part-time employee.

Full-time hourly associates begin receiving coverage on the first day of the month when their 89th day of employment occurs.

If you’re a part-time hourly associate, you need to enroll during a 60-day period after your one-year anniversary of working for Sam’s Club.

For short-term disability, full-time employees get automatically enrolled after working there for a year.

You’ll be eligible for your 401(k) contributions after your hire date. But the company will only start matching your 401(k) if you’re credited with a minimum of 1,000 hours during your first year.

The contributions start on the first day of the month after your first anniversary as an employee.
