15 healthcare work-from-home jobs
Jump to section

When you hear of healthcare jobs, what typically comes to mind is a doctor or nurse taking care of a patient in a hospital.

However, about 28% of employees across all industries are estimated to work fully remote within the next five years. So the question is: Can you work remotely in healthcare, too?

The answer is: yes!

According to Owl Labs, healthcare has the highest share of remote workers at 15%. If you’re looking for a remote job in that field, update up your resume because a growing number of telehealth jobs don't require you to commute.

In this article, you’ll discover 15 excellent remote healthcare jobs you can do from home.

What are healthcare work-from-home jobs?

Healthcare work-from-home jobs are jobs in the medical field that don’t require you to commute to work. Instead, you do your job from home — usually over the computer.

This means that you don’t have to be present on-site at a hospital or clinic, for example. While some of these jobs require contact with patients, others focus more on administrative tasks where you support the on-site staff like doctors and nurses.

What skills are important for remote healthcare work?

For remote healthcare jobs, some of your skills and qualities are more important than others. These include:

  • Effective communication (as you mostly use your phone, email, and online tools)

  • Organization and time management

  • Independent working

  • Self-motivation

  • Ability to use different types of technology

What are healthcare jobs that allow you to work from home?

Here are 15 healthcare work-from-home jobs you can pursue.

1. Medical coder

In a medical coding job, you input patient health records for insurance companies by applying the proper codes into a computer system. This means that you’ll update a patient’s file after any procedure, and you’re involved in insurance claims, patient payments, and the billing process.

Average salary: $44,620/year

Necessary qualifications: High school diploma (or equivalent), professional coder certification or experience may be required.

2. Medical biller

As a medical biller, a medical facility usually employs you. Your job is to submit claims to health insurance companies and follow up on them.

You make sure that the facility is compensated for the work performed and that the patient is billed correctly so that they can make payments on time.

Average salary: $40,478/year

Necessary qualifications: High school diploma (or equivalent), medical billing certificate (can be done online).

3. Medical transcriptionist

When working as a medical transcriptionist, you listen to voice recordings from doctors, physicians, and other healthcare workers. From there, you transcribe the voice notes into written reports. Sometimes you may also create finished documents from these reports.

Average salary: $34,636/year

Necessary qualifications: High school diploma or GED, medical transcription certificate is a plus.

4. Medical writer/freelance nurse writer

If you like writing about medicine and have knowledge of the healthcare industry, then you should consider becoming a medical writer or freelance nurse writer. You can write research reports, marketing materials, manuals, studies, whitepapers, and more.

Average salary: $39,279/year

Necessary qualifications: High school diploma (or equivalent), experience in customer service is a plus.

6. Telephone triage nurse

As a telephone triage nurse, you typically talk to patients over the phone or via video chat and give medical advice. Usually, only registered nurses perform this job. When talking to patients, you'll evaluate their symptoms and tell them how to best resolve the issue.

Average salary: $23/hour

Necessary qualification: Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing, previous experience as a registered nurse is often required.

Legal nurse consultants (LNC) work on legal cases and clinical-related issues. As an LNC, you are an invaluable part of a legal team and provide insights into medical issues. You may work in a law firm or an insurance company, or you have your own consulting practice.

Average salary: $78,805/year

Necessary qualifications: Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing, previous experience as a registered nurse in different specialties is a plus.

8. Online nurse educator

Their work is usually part of a medical facility’s education program.

Average salary: $77,692/year

Necessary qualifications: Be a registered nurse, have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing.

9. Registered nurse case manager
