Temp to Hire

So I have been working for this company as a contract employee in one department for about 2.5 months. Then I asked if I wanted to interview for a different department that my qualifications fit over and above. After interviewing with the department head I was told that this would be a hired on position once I met my contract hours. Then last week I had another meeting with the department head and was told that I had apply for this position on their website after being transferred to the department. Will I went ahead and applied online through their website and now it seems like a waiting game. I have done contract work in over 30 years. Is this how Corporations work now days? My apologies for the long message.

Should I make a follow up phone call?

I was contacted by a recruiter (in Maryland) for an interview with a major company that is very good pay, benefits, direct hire and where I would like to live. She told me that I should be contacted by another recruiter (in Texas where the job is and I am) in about 1 to 2 weeks out. It's been about a week and a half so far without a phone call as yet. My question to you folks: is it a bad idea (too forward or inappropriate) to make a call to find out if I am still in the running for an interview? Not too many jobs like this have come my way in a while. I only get garbage contract employee offers. Thanks all for any suggestions.
