Major Stress

I was excited when I received my acceptance letter for college back in Feb. My goal was to pursue a degree in social work focusing on either mental health or substance abuse but recently I’ve been feeling discouraged from all the negative comments I’m consistently getting from family, friends, and everyone else once they hear what I’m doing. Their all stressing me out over spending so much money on an education where I’ll never be able to earn enough money to make a decent living. They tell me I’ll always be overworked and dissatisfied with the job because no one ever gets better. The say my career will be full of frustration and disappointment. Now, none of these people work or have any experience in this career so I know these aren’t qualified opinions but all the negativity is starting to take it’s toll on me. I haven’t even started school yet and I’m already thinking about changing majors or even postponing school altogether. My true passion is to help people not get rich. I didn’t think choosing a major would be so stressful and confusing but are they right? Should I get into a more financially rewarding career?

Is it too late to change my career path?

I’ve been working in social services for over 10 years now and still paying off student loans for my social worker undergraduate and graduate degrees but I’ve had it! My passion when I started all of this was to help people, support my community, and try to make the world a better place (misguided youthful dreams!). But all the frustration over the bureaucracy to get things done and inadequate financial benefits has caught up with me. I don’t think I can sanely keep this up another 30+ years but what kind of job or industry an I transition into with my background without going back to school or even worse… taking a paycut?

I am a job seeker with a Masters' in Social Work. I am a teacher with the Norfolk Public school system and am looking for something that is more clinical and that matches my Social Work skills. I am a seasoned Business executive who is a career switcher and have a vast field of knowledge in the Geriatric field of Social Work, and in the area of Substance abuse as well as Mental Health.
