How would you recommend getting my foot in the door with a social service position; i.e. counseling, working with under served populations, mentoring etc...

I lost my job a month and half ago and never thought it would be this hard to get hired again. I've been in the human serves field about 20 years trying not to give in

I am a substance abuse counselor with roughly 20 years in the field, including 18 years in corrections, 16 of which were with the Maine State Prison. I developed programs for different levels of addiction (and interest), trained new employees, was liaison for the 12-step programs and volunteers, and served on the classification committee. I am currently looking (in mid-coast Maine) for similar work, I hope for people who allow creativity, exchange of ideas, and my own opinion about things (this doesn't mean I go against supervisors, though my last one didn't understand this). I want to work for someone who respects my knowledge and experience.

I want to get in career field of Human Services anybody have any advice. Then again I thought about social service I like helping people so I believe I be a good asset for what ever job I get and it's increase field .

I worked at DCFS from 1984 to 2011 at which point I retired. I carried a caseload; worked at the shelter; worker in post-adoptions and with private agencies placing DCFS wards with the appropriate agency.
