Not missing another sunset

I decided to end my 9-5 day job and start enjoying life more. I will start to collect SSN (I am 63) and will work part time. I was hating Mondays and the weekends were too short. I want to see the sunsets instead of being in an office. I have lots of life to live.

My name is Deborah, but i have not been to WalMart.

Since I have not been to Wal-Mart I feel someone should rethink there insult to a Sr citizen.

I am a senior citizen and haven't been employed for three years. I am ready to enter the workforce again and not sure where to start.

Desparately seeking security, not poverty.

I just have a little to say in this venue, for this evening.

The Truth is that I had no notion that, as I neared retirement age, I would have medical issues surface that would interrupt my life's activities and plans. I admit that I took my good health for granted and perhaps missed some early warning signs.

Then the walls came tumbling down, ultimately crumbling my foundation.

It was then that I found myself disabled and had to leave an active career and predictable, reasonably ample and stable salary. EVERYTHING changed.

I found myself in my doctor's office more than ever, examined from my forehead to my heels, internally and out. Eventually, I became limited In my abilities to work at all. Yes, it came time to redeem my SSA coupons that I reviewed each year after I turned age 50.

Now comes the disappointingly (for me) news: as I had become disabled by a few years before my official retirement age, I was "penalized" by nearly $400 per month, increased by only 1.5% ("Cost of Living") per month annually, if the US Government administration allowed (Obama did not for 1 year of his 8.)

Then came the major medical reforms, from none to mandatory, and the Medicare/Medicaid policy coverage. I had no premium to pay, initially. Then after 5 years, I got blindsided with a monthly premium bill, deducted from my monthly, direct deposited "benefits" check. I was flabbergasted!! Now I have to reapply each year for the supplemental and extra help program by my state, have fallen into the low income status, and still cannot work as I once did.

For the reasons I describe here, I now seek some manner of employment to allow me sustenance, and maybe come closer to the life I had been accustomed to, or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof. I'm unsure what sort of employment I may be able to secure but I really can't see the end of the tunnel as I try to get out of this abyss.

Godspeed to you all in your job search.

Second Careers and Beyond

At 62 I am contemplating a life changing trilogy.Call it my third act. Visualize an inverted triangle where motherhood and my teaching career were my priorities. Now I seek a simple, calm life where money problems do not cause me worry. A life of HOPE, FAITH and CHARITY provide that for me now. Is there an encore in my future? Only the HOLY SPIRIT can guide me there from thiis place!

Lucky

It is not necessary for me to be employed, however, retirement leaves much to be desired and I enjoy the challenges that complex jobs provide. Am I stealing from a younger person who actually needs a job?

Job Hunting After 50...Tips I've Learned

In the last 6 months being unemployed, I've learned a few "tips" for people over 50 looking for a job. I would like to share them with you in the hopes that I may help someone. (I am 60).

  1. There is a career coaching site www.careerconfidential.com run by Peggy McKee. She offers free webinars that are very insightful. Many of her topics are geared toward people over 50. Some Tips of Hers that I learned:
  2. If you've had the same hairstyle the last 20 years...update it. I did this. This is especially true for women.
  3. Buy an outfit or 2 that is "in style but professional" if you haven't already. This is especially true for women.
  4. Create a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already. Add connections from your past professional roles. Be active on LinkedIn which shows you are computer / social media literate. Always add a photo, and a background photo. You can use mine as an example: www.linkedin.com/in/cathy1
  5. Update your resume - use keywords and bullet points. No paragraphs as they never get read. Quantify your accomplishments using numbers, dollars and percentages where ever you can.
  6. Try to remain upbeat (yea right). Depressed and frustrated is more like it. I do not mean to sound like a know it all or sarcastic in any way shape or form. I hope that this helps somebody, and for more help you can visit her website www.careerconfidential.com. (No, she doesn't know I'm sharing this with you. I am not getting a kickback of any kind. I'm doing it out of the kindness of my own heart). My kickback is that I help someone. Good Luck and God Bless. ~ Cathy

Retired and starting over

Any suggestions about starting back in the workforce I've tried retirement for 6 months and want to go back to work. Previous company has suggested consulting but I really do not want to jump back into that pressure cooker.
