A friend who work there recommended the job

A friend worked they're and he gave me the info

I worked at a state university for almost 6 years. I had to quit for various reasons that I won't go into here. I didn't do anything wrong except I didn't give 2 weeks notice. I was being treated so badly I just couldn't stay any longer. This was in October 2013. I have been looking for a job now and I berlieve with all my heart that this former employer is giving me a bad reference which is keeping me from getting a job. What can I do?

Regarding references: It seems that almost all companies ask for professional references as part of their hiring process. At the same time, large companies frequently have policies against their people providing such. In my case, in the last 11+ years, I've worked at two major companies. Neither allows references. This puts me in a difficult position when applying for work. It is certainly possible to create fake people for this purpose, but that seems like a bad idea. How do y'all handle this?

I got hired because I was highly referred in the apartment world and I had 3 years of experience in leasing.
